2016 was the year of new places to explore with my family! No backpacking trips in 2016, but we did a lot of camping and day hiking. We moved to NE Oregon, went to Crater Lake, Mt. Rainier, North Cascades, and Olympic National Parks (all new to us) along with a bunch of new National Forests, Hells Canyon NRA, Columbia River Gorge NRA, Whitman Mission NHS, John Day Fossil Beds NM, and other cool places in between. Now we're moving to Northern California and have a new area to explore! I've never been to Lassen NP nor hiked in the surrounding National Forests so I'm thrilled! Also want to tackle the Lost Coast! Who wants to come with?

I have not stepped out of the house yet, this year.

I have not stepped out of the house yet, this year. I rode my bike to the grocery store to buy eggs so I could make the waffles. So I beat you!

My first full year of retirement. 3 three week trips to AZ, CO, OR. 2 two week trips in the Sierras. More local weekend trips than I can recall. Numerous dayhikes and long all day mountain bike rides. No bikepacking. I got out a lot in 2016, more than any other year so far. 2017 will probably be less, still planning next summer's excursions. Only have a 6 week snowbird hiatus planned so far, leaving next week.

Not often enough.
BUT -- I did get to hike the Camino de Santiago with my Mom, and that was amazing.

Only one backpacking trip this year I'm sad to say, in late March. My hiking vacations are generally in early spring or in the fall, because April through August is softball season. Unfortunately I tore my left (non-throwing) rotator cuff in early June, and I'm still recovering from mid-Sept surgery. I've been doing a lot of short local hikes since Thanksgiving, using vacation days that normally would have been softball tournaments and backpacking trips. My Gomboy Silky folding saw has been put to good use, clearing old overgrown unofficial trails that were falling into disuse.

I can't complain. I knew the Scotland trek would be the highlight, but I also managed to squeeze in two Colorado trips and took a long break in AZ and UT. I look forward to fresh opportunities in the new year.

I had a great idea about 2.5 years ago. I was in a blogging conference when a light bulb went off. I was going to go home and turn my home in a homestead. In the middle of freaking town. As Ldyblade can attest....it kind of took over my life. This past year we got very serious, and summer is busy. On the other hand, I have created an entirely new business for us: Never Free Farm, which I am actually making a living off of (shocking). Went for a First Day hike this morning with the family, then spent the afternoon making more products for our shop. Spent yesterday in my greenhouse while it snowed. I'd like to say I have a lot of time, but not time where I can just leave. Plants don't like being ignored...and until we build a good irrigation system I am tied down. We have the water tanks installed so far (2200 gallons of stored rain water), and solar power running the greenhouse....
I do walk a lot, and we live on a rail to trail in town. My van was in a nasty t-bone in August. I got a payout (fully insured and paid off) and well, I haven't bought a vehicle still. I walk a lot. The money sits there, in case. I'm thinking of sinking part of it into a work bike, so I can haul to the farmers market next summer.
And long story short, no, I got ZERO nights this past year. It's OK. I walked/hiked 1,978 miles so there is that. I just never popped a tent up is all.

I had a really good year of hiking and photography. My favorite hike (ever) was the 13 day trip to Snow Lake, in the Karakorams. My longest dayhike was a 30mi/6100ft elevation gain jaunt on one of my conditioning hikes. I used to keep stats to track my yearly progress, but haven't the past 3-4 years due to laziness. I know that I have 27 hiking trips in 2016 on which I took the camera, and probably more than these on which I didn't. I'd guess, based on previous good years when I did keep stats, that I had around 60 trips, with 150,000ft of elevation gain and about 600mi hiked.

I can only share the photos with her. Yeah, my Mom is 71. We had put off the hike for two years, and she realized it was time to go before things started falling apart. She's still a badass.

well, so's mine. But she's 88, and hiking is pretty much over. I'm glad we got some good trips before she got old.
