"The first time I heard Junior, I just went crazy." - Iggy Pop I think it's time for some Iggy.

The YouTube algorithm, in it's robotic way, based on my search activity, offered up the Jim Kimbrough album. It was the album cover that convinced me to give him a listen. I'm so glad I did. I ended up playing Most Things Haven't Worked Out on the show. I'll work other of his songs into the playlist in the future. Thanks to Ruben for bringing attention to Jim Kimbrough. Junior Kimbrough, not Jim. Here's the story. (You might want to try this yourself. If it's hot outside with minimal man-made sounds, you can add opening the windows) I gave a friend the Most Things CD. Told him to wait until it was completely dark, maybe even wait until around midnight or so, and get half drunk. ONLY half. Turn out all the lights. Put on Most Things. Loud enough to completely fill the room, like it was a live show. Listen, and feel the heat of the North Mississippi Hill Country pass over you in endless long waves. A month or two later I got a call at about 1am. I figured it was an emergency at work. "This is incredible!" "Huh?" "You were right, this is crazy stuff!" "Jim?" "Yeah. I'm listening to Junior Kimbrough like you told me to. Half drunk, lights off, all that." "Cool. Have a nice night, buddy. I'm going back to sleep now."

You might want to try this yourself. I am certainly going to try that. I have the right stereo, a swamp cooler and some semi-cold beer.

I thought I posted a trailer for this a couple of months ago, but can't find it now. Anyway, I finally got around to watching it. I saw it on a plane in November. It was a great joy and brought back so many memories of that era. I really look forward to the additional material that Questlove is rumored to be preparing.

Junior's semi-acoustic duet with Charlie Feathers, Release Me, is really nice. At least in my opinion. I know close to nothing about Charlie Feathers, but per Wikipedia he was a country music and rockabilly musician. He [Charlie Feathers] studied and recorded several songs with Junior Kimbrough, whom he called "the beginning and end of all music."en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Feathers

I saw it on a plane in November. It was a great joy and brought back so many memories of that era. I look at that film and the social issues of the day, and I wonder how we could have failed so miserably given the 50+ years we've had to improve since then. It's embarrassing.

Despite those issues, I think there was a sense then that improvement was coming within reach. That optimism went through a few cycles since then. It seems near a low point now.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has a new album out called Dirt Does Dylan. Of course it's Dylan covers. Here is the first single from it. Joining the Dirt Band are the sisters Larkin Poe. It's going to be a good record.

In another forum someone recently mentioned Carnaval des Animaux, by Saint Saens. This brought back memories of L'Apocalypse des Animaux by Vangelis, he of Chariots of Fire fame, the highly experimental and grappa-fueled Aphrodite's Child (the 666 album), etc., in his early days. So I pulled out the CD. Le Singe Bleu was always one of my favorites. The last two tracks on the CD, Creation du Monde, and La Mer Recommence, are also favorites. La Mer Recommence

Local rockabilly legend Al Foul died yesterday. Ultimately, it was throat cancer. But, he had a few issues. Heavy smoker and heavy drinker. He had an underground following. But, we all knew his name. Here is one of his songs.

Here’s some recent rockers from the UK. The duo Royal Blood has an interesting concept for a 2-piece rock band. Unlike the White Stripes duo (US - Detroit) that launched guitarist/singer Jack White’s career, this duo is bass guitar and drums.
After a macho little posturing..

Well, I'm somewhat... I'm not really sure what I am. Surprised is not the right word but its the closest thing I can think of. Benjamin Todd produced another wonderful work. I've heard some of his beautiful songs. But most of them carry a deep bitterness to them. But this, there's not that deep sourness somewhere inside. Just sorrow, loss, regret. Almost brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it. youtu.be/_zrsQbqiMJI
