Skipping over the backstory, I ended up trying to find a video of a good show I saw pre-covid. It took a while, but I figured out that it was Yonder Mountain String Band. I'm not a fan of their perpetual spinning light show (not bad in the video below), but damn, they were good. The mandolin player with the man bun, the gal on fiddle (she's got that soul voice)... Son of a Preacher Man I guess it's a good thing when I go to good shows that I can't even remember (no alcohol, no drugs). My cup runneth over, even with a covid hiatus.
And get this. They covered Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. With a mandolin. Dig it.

I played this song on the radio last Sunday. No one called in to complain (that I know of). Times have changed. I don't think radio in 1968 would have played it.

Every now and again, you just need to hear Springsteen turned up to 11.

Years ago, I heard a song over internet radio that I marked as a Favorite. Elizabeth Cotten. I made sure to remember the name because I wanted to hear more. A few minutes later, I was out the door to perform a site visit in the south side of Syracuse. I asked the owner if there was anything I should know about surrounding properties, and he said the house across the street was (the late) "Libba" Cotten's. He remembered several famous musicians going in and out, most notably (to him) Jerry Garcia. What a weird coincidence. After leaving the site, I went to city hall to review records. The main doors were closed due to construction, so I went in some side doors and took the stairs. At the top of the stair... a portrait of Libba Cotten! Some nice Cotten-pickin':

Another good cover by Postmodern Jukebox Saw PMJ in Nashville a couple of years back. Outstanding show, needless to say. They were followed by Straight No Chaser, vocal band formed quite a while back at the U of Indiana.

I grew up almost right across the street from Paul. His older brother Allen had a 70s model silver Monte Carlo that was passed down to Paul at some point when Paul and I were in high school in the mid-1980s when Allen got a new car. Allen left in the 8 track player and custom-built speaker box he'd made at the machine shop. We had a handful of Allen's 8 track tapes to go with the player. There were three that we liked most: Eagles Greatest Hits Vol 1, Blues Brothers Briefcase Full of Blues and ZZ Top's Tres Hombres. Allen's Tres Hombres 8 track that was handed down to Paul was my introduction to ZZ Top.
The Monte Carlo eventually died and Paul bought a Chevy Blazer. Paul pulled the 8 track player out of the Monte Carlo and put it in the Blazer. On Friday nights, we'd stake out Jr. Food Mart or that store out at Moore's Crossroads and look for someone to buy us beer. We'd get a 12 pack of Budweiser and ride. Sometimes it was a handful of folks in the Blazer; sometimes it was just me and Paul.
Paul would turn off the pavement onto a dirt road and say "You're never gonna believe where we come out." We rode old mining roads with that 12 pack getting increasingly warmer as we went because we were dumb teenagers and never considered using a cooler.
We'd run through those same three 8 tracks over and over again. He'd turn back onto blacktop hours later and miles from where we left it---much of that area we used to ride has turned into suburban subdivisions now.
At one point during that era, we were way out in the middle of nowhere on the dirt roads with Tres Hombres in. Conversation had died down and we both caught the line "We was out in the sticks down Highway 6." It stuck with us. Tres Hombres became our dirt road favorite.
Sitting in the dentist office today, I got a text from Paul asking if I'd heard about Dusty Hill.
RIP Dusty---Thanks for the tunes.

.., ZZ Top's Tres Hombres… ZZ Top was a staple of rock/pop in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Always enjoyed listening to them from grade school even into college on the radio (pre-setlist). Always a fun band to listen to.

Had no idea this was coming out until it popped up on Spotify. Halfway in, it's great. The excessive calls for audience participation get kinda old in a couple of songs, but it catches Hartford at his quirky/crazy best. Sounds like this was on Morning Bugle tour or thereabouts.

I first learned about Shel Silverstein from a girl I was dating in college. She recommended his controversial yet highly praised book The Giving Tree. I read it but didn't find it entertaining. It wasn't till some years later that I found out that Silverstein wrote most of the songs performed by Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show and also wrote the Johnny Cash hit A Boy Named Sue. While looking for some music to play this Sunday, I came across a short biography of Silverstein and learned that he was in the U.S. Army and served in Japan and Korea. Here is one of his songs.
