Not fast, getting old, no thru hiking, not that ultralight, probably short distance hikes to most, but I joined anyway. My wife and I live close to the Greens and Adk's. , and have trails very close , including the AT/LT. We travel, usually once a year, to the Sierra (I once lived on the east side), other western ranges, or our latest ventures- the Big Ditch. April will make our 4th year in a row for canyon trips. We still winter camp (though below zero is getting a little rugged) and get out fairly often. If I can contribute something I will, but I expect this will mostly be a reading exercise. So thanks for letting me lurk.

Welcome from Texas! The Grand Canyon is the first place I ever backpacked -- amazing place!

Don't have to be fast or ultralight to get there. Enjoy it.... And welcome from Illinois.

Welcome on board from here in SoCal. Love the east side of the sierra, but conditions are a lot different these daze. When you say big ditch, do you mean Yosemite Valley or the Grand Canyon. In climbing circles, the "big ditch" is a reference to Yosemite Valley.

Welcome, Bluefish! Plodding is good. So is short mileage with a nap after you set up camp. Not that I'd ever do that, oh, no, not at all :D
You can't really be here, though, until you tell us how you feel about kilts, brussel's sprouts, beets, bacon, and beer. Some will say you have to discuss okra, but I believe the less said about that the better.

Thanks all, what a warm welcome. In reply to Rebecca: Nix on kilts (mosquito country) , especially after nipped with the first frost (referring to the Brussels , not the kilts!) pickled is good, the candy of meats and a staple BP food for us , and I over-indulged in my wayward youth, so I never got to experience the explosion of micro-brews and liquid gustatory choices people now have. No problem with others enjoying, though! Big Ditch is the Grand Canyon to me, my Camp 4 days are long done, along with my range of motion and strength to weight ratio. I never got past 5.7, anyway. I'd probably still like to get bruised and skinned up in the Buttermilks and Alabama Hills if I still lived in Bishop or Lone Pine. I might just share a little more than I expected here, I see I'm among fine folks.

my Camp 4 days are long done, along with my range of motion and strength to weight ratio. I hear you. I got to 10.c but rarely climb any more. Had an unfortunate accident that left me balance impaired. Never climbed in the the Alabama Hills, but did a fair amount in the Buttermilk's in my youth. Mainly climbed at Idlwild and Joshua Tree.

Welcome Lurker...I would appreciate it if you would at least post an evil laughter after you state that from now on. We appreciate lurkers...I think.

I'm not really a fast hiker either. Of course I'm not slow, so I guess that makes me a half-fast hiker. :(
Howdy and welcome!

Welcome from PA. @tdale is not entirely correct. Only half of us are nuts, the other half are fine...so long as we don't run out of meds. Enjoy lurking!
