In the last few days the Smiley collection has gone AWOL. Sort of! Here is the scoop:
There are two ways to post a message: The standard uses the REPLY button in the top-right of the text entry window. But as an added option, there is a Quick Reply that is automatically available. Same familiar space. And as an option for that option, a plug-in adds a row of formatting buttons. One of those buttons is the menu for adding a smiley. With me so far? Here comes the new problem:
The Quick Reply smileys are not appearing. Just the standard issue group. But after too much time testing and trying to fix this, I had discovered that the REPLY option (easy to miss) is just what it should be, the smiley menu fully populated with (too many) goofy additions.
The idea is to see if you can live without the Quick Reply space? It is actually not really that much better in any way, and the REPLY button lets you spell check, stylize, add graphics and preview your work.
Would there be an uprising if I turned off the Quick Reply to see if it's missed? Or one step at a time, I can disable the styling menu in that area to simply allow basic text entry.
Hmmmm. Can this happen?
I will let you have time to start using the REPLY button. It has always been there, but I'd like to shut down the Qrick Reply.

Currently when you quote someone, the quoted text appears in the Quick Reply box. What would happen without the Quick Reply?

Currently when you quote someone, the quoted text appears in the Quick Reply box. What would happen without the Quick Reply? If you use quick quote, it does appear there. But if you then click "Reply" the quote shows up there, complete with little green box. So I'm guessing if there's no "Quick Reply" option, the quote will just show up in the Reply window when you click the button. I use Quick Reply most of the time, and the real problem isn't the change in the smiley menu--it's that the smileys still show up with the odd versions when you post. So a sad face shows up like this: (ETA: actually, this time it didn't show up at all--just as the typed characters. But on my last experiment, it did this: )

I hate all smilies and emoticons. But, that's me. I've never used one and never will.

Stand your ground, DD! Nobody will force you to use a smiley.

smileys still show up with the odd versions This is because when I was totally new to doing this stuff, I started adding custom smiley images by replacing some of the standards. I was clearly missing the fact that some people type in keystrokes rather than use a graphic menu. So that's why the keystrokes often conjure a surprise. Now I am faced with doing a re-set to defaults and adding a corrected list of custom smileys. This is a task, so I'm not going to get this done by tomorrow. Who wants to be Smiley Manager?

I voted "not sure" because I seldom use "Reply" unless I'm doing something fairly complicated and need to "preview".
In fact, if I have anything "complicated" to produce here at all (that doesn't happen all that often anymore), I use a customizable bulletin board editor to produce a decent intermediate result and then paste the "code" for that into the "Reply" window to use the "preview" function to make final adjustments. Otherwise, I just use the "Quick Reply" window.
I almost never use graphic "smileys" since I see them as an impediment to communication due to their indirect mediation via a "translation database" (they're not exactly a WYSIWYG sort of thing, as is demonstrated quite aptly by the attempted uses in the posts above. Sometimes you get text, sometimes you get the graphic you intended and sometimes you get whatever the text representation was changed to by the guy managing the equivalency/translation database - or perhaps you even get a blank/nothing. IOW: message transmission fail. If you use the "smiley/emoticon selector", you lose your train of thought. I actually do some "handstands" to avoid software translation, like putting a "nose" on my text smileys, thusly: :^)
Text is, IMHO, more direct and more understandable, given reasonable ability to use the language and type. (My typing skills leave a lot to be desired, but I'm methodically OCD, so I proofread longer stuff most times.)
Finally, completely off-topic and irrelevant - if I recall correctly - most forum software I've used had the "reply button" at the top of each post. I never understood why the button would be at the top or bottom (or both): when I "reply", I'm almost always replying to a specific post. It makes sense that the "Reply button" should copy the text in a given post and then put you in a window in which you can edit.
That said, mind you, I don't really want a "software change"! Let me repeat that: That said, mind you, I don't really want a "software change"!
I'd rather just have the "smiley button" removed from the problematic edit window - I don't use it anyway - or else I'd prefer that we get what we just got - a warning that it doesn't work - and just keep doing what I do now: ignore it. I also mostly ignore and don't use the font color, bold, italic, underscore and strikethrough buttons: I know the codes and simply type them. I don't want to stop typing and reach for the mouse, mostly because I'm an old time Unix vi editor person - for example: I still find myself using j, k, h and l keyboard keys to "navigate" documents in wordprocessors. (Hint, hint: it doesn't work except in my version of vi which I still use: Vim 8.0.) If I want to check for (my often plentiful) typing errors, I go to the "Reply" window where I can "preview".
ETA: My daughter is addicted to stuff like \(^O^)/ - which she uses on her phone in text messages all the time. Most times, I have to get a "translation" from her - presumably, her "ingroup" circle of friends understands them all!
(‿ꜟ‿) ... "yoga booty" ( V ) ... "yoga full frontal???" (•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■) ... uh..."cool???" @^@ :P~~~~ ... "raspberry" (_ε_)... "kiss my ..."
TOO MANY POSSIBILITIES!

I've found the Quick Reply vs Reply choice to be a little confusing and the advantage of having both has never been obvious to me. I'm all for shutting down Quick Reply. Keep it simple.
