Maybe I'm missing it, but how we quote a small part of another post without the Quick Reply?
If it's left to us to edit out extra text, you know how that goes.

Maybe I'm missing it, but how we quote a small part of another post without the Quick Reply? Highlight the area you want to quote, just like with the quick reply. Click on the Quick Quote. Hit the Reply button. There you will find the quote, just as you would with Quick Reply. No difference.

This was answered by grabbing some text and then hitting reply. I will have to shut off the Quck Reply to make sure we all see the difference. I see the poll is quite willing to at least try. I'll close it now (as soon as I find the switch!)

Okay, quick quote doesn't work without Quick Reply! Bummer. I'll see if there is something more to add that to REPLY. The simple Quote in Reply always leads to entire messages getting repeated, then that reply gets quoted, the circus continues. I guss Quick Reply is here to stay. The lack of smilies is remedied by starting qith Quick, then changing to REPLY. Bizarre.

Oops, big difference after all.
We shall survive.

Well, now, that was a surprise. I used : and ) to make that smiley via the quick reply. Usually that results in that BIG rather ugly smiley face. This time it is the small one that I would expect. Testing ; and ) now.
Ugh, too bad what should be a little winking face results in that weird frowny face.

Interesting. On my phone the winking face looks right.

Several things are making this confusing. Some of it my doing, some of it just a difference in mobile vs. desktop: Fact: There are two versions of the software. One for desktop makes use of plug-ins, optional software widgets that make new things possible. The Quick Quote is a plug-in. There are several others installed. They work fine...on a desktop or laptop. Then there is a software version for mobile devices and those do not yet understand the plug-ins. Generally this is not a problem, and a new version is "coming soon" that will give mobile devices the same look and functionality of the "standard" version. Then there is the smiley problem: when I put this forum together, I started adding different icons to either expand the range of silliness, or to replace the tiny faces with some that were bigger. That was a mistake on two fronts: the bigger icons are too big, and I was not paying attention to the keystroke codes. So if I replaced a small icon with another, the keystrokes you know are mapped to the replacement. Result is an unexpected image. In short, I made a botch of it and I need to reset the whole list. That part is easy, but then rebuilding takes time. I just really thought the graphic menu was way better than typing keystrokes. Guess I was wrong. (no red-faced smiley?)

I've found the Quick Reply vs Reply choice to be a little confusing and the advantage of having both has never been obvious to me. I'm all for shutting down Quick Reply. Keep it simple I like the quick reply function. A lot.

"You're pretty much Hero for life." (IPad version of quoting - lol)
Agreed. We don't need em' - they were just a fun novelty. We are smart enough to use our words. *dancingMexicanjalapeños*

I just really thought the graphic menu was way better than typing keystrokes. So, you either always use touchscreens or you are a dyed-in-the-wool "Apple person". Given your previously noted comments here on "not fully understanding the problems people were having with their (ugh) PCs", I suspect the latter. But there are many worlds out there. If your only experience was via movies, you could be forgiven for thinking that there was only one kind of computer. Apple has pretty much sewn that world up, haven't they? Mostly, with the exception of the odd mainframe-like machine, like the "WOPR" or "HAL" of yore. But for many of those of us who are truly ancient, "computer" always meant "teletype terminal attached to large mainframe" - and NO GRAPHICS! I suppose that's why I am still in awe of my "tiny sliver of silicon" iPhone 7. It does everything the computer I learned on - the IBM 1401 mainframe - did and so much more. And it's only 7mm thick, and even less inside it's curvy aluminum skin! That old 1401 had tapes and, IIRC, about 8K (not M, not G, but K) of memory. (That may overestimate its capacities: input was via huge trays of cards. Output was printed, for God's sake!) The phone company once did all of their billing on such a device. I still am strongly wedded to my origins, so I do a lot via text. I still avoid emoticons & smileys (other than the ASCII ones), though I'm a heavy user of voice-to-text entry. Therefore, I am a lowly "terminal text entry peasant". Interesting story: when my company first introduced graphic displays for their product, I still coded the bloody stuff on a TTY terminal, taking "walking breaks to the lab" to check on the final result (there were only 2 "graphic terminals" in the "demo room"), making notes, then returning to my TTY terminal to make changes. This went on for 2 years, mind you. Not very efficient, ay? But we were banned from bringing this salient fact of life up in staff meetings as a reason for the "clunkiness" of our graphical user interface. :^) Apple does NOT reign supreme everywhere. In the gaming world: I self-identify as "Filthy Console Peasant" in the gaming world, you see.

or you are a dyed-in-the-wool "Apple person" I'm a very happy apple person. But I like to type and not let go of the keyboard to get the mouse So I almost always type my smileys, resulting in all sorts of fun.

I just really thought the graphic menu was way better than typing keystrokes. Guess I was wrong. (no red-faced smiley?) No reason for a red faced smiley! Graphics for the more exotic images are good. But, the basic smile, wink, frown or laugh are quick and easy to type.
