also think reuben should make at least one cameo appearance, kilted while carrying a fine single malt and a slab of bacon. I may be going to Scotland next year. I could pick up a "real" kilt in my clan tartan. I'm not a scotch drinker, but if I'm wearing a kilt and holding a slab of bacon there's no telling what I might try. I'm pretty sure that zeke's more of a scotch drinker than I am. It's probably been 10 years or more since I had any scotch. And the bacon will have to be Benton's or another fine grade, free of nitrates and nitrites. My clan's motto is "either peace or war", and the truth is we were terrible at the former and darn good at the latter. We've been called the Hell's Angels of Scotland.

What about following a hiker with real physical challenges? Their work to overcome added challenges, the indomitable human spirit, those who support their effort? This is somewhere around what I'm thinking. One of the most durable archetypes of literature is the "suffering hero." It's a theme older than the ancient Greeks. Either by fate or their own human faults, they have suffered greatly and somehow survived. Maybe they have a crucial handicap. Maybe it is even of their own making. Maybe they have lost spouse and kids and blame themselves. And maybe they are to blame. Maybe they are full of self-doubt. Maybe they are like the poor guy who never amounted to much, and from whom no one expected much. Maybe they are the rookie who stumbled into a field of pros. In whatever circumstance, they are unwilling heroes. They are human. They are like us. They are full of faults and imperfections. Yet somehow they can endure the pain of great accomplishment because they have suffered the pains of great failure. They won't show us how great they are. They will show us how imperfect they are, how human. I don't want to hear about a perfect legend. I want to hear about a faulty human. Then I will like him or her, because they are more like me. Upon that theme great movies have been made.

Uh, OK, but I contend that there's a big difference between 4 Wheel Bob and Anthony Weiner.

...in which case rebeccad may defer to her body double, Sandra Bullock. That's what understudies are for.

How about "the Ghost", Heather “Anish” Anderson.

And there needs to be a nighttime campfire scene where the actors reminisce about MataHariHiker, ChuckD, Bill Forrester, and others.

I don't know about the movie, but the party is sounding awfully good. We might be back to "Pickle Gulch: The Movie." ...in which case rebeccad may defer to her body double, Sandra Bullock. That's what understudies are for. *Definitely* As for the 4WheelBob film--I think that's already being/been made. Didn't he share the trailer?

Obviously some folks prefer comedy. . . . or fantasy. How about the "Ninja Librarian's Backpacking Fantasy." Once upon a time in a lonely Western town there was a librarian who dreamed of backpacking with Sandra Bullock. . . .

Thanks for the responses. There's some really insightful thoughts here. I'm just an amateur at film making, hoping to take it to the next level -- whatever that is. Have backpacked for 20 years or so to answer a couple of your questions. Lots of experience with just about everything. I agree with the comments about aspects of a quality documentary...good scenery, good story, not just a guy with a GoPro throwing it around. I've got the guys for a good story, quality character profiles, the ups and downs of the trail, etc. (all except the tragedy part . I was simply looking for ideas. Thought about the Tahoe Rim Trail as not much has been done on that. But, to answer another few questions, I'm looking to hit the broader audience -- both newbies and experienced backpackers. No 'how to' stuff. Just the story of the guys and trail. I'm looking for a trail or idea that would serve that goal. So I appreciate the ideas and suggestions. Last note: most of us have little kids so it's tough to get away for an extended period. So a shorter trip 4-5 days that would hit that broad audience would be gold. Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone!

Or neked chicks. Those movies never get old... Like a version of Naked and Afraid, but make it Naked and Backpacking? Well, that wouldn't work as well as the N & A - the backpacks would obscure some of the naked butts, which seems to be the primary shots in the N & A episodes. Besides, to be fair some men should be included as well....equal opportunity and all that. What about following a hiker with real physical challenges? Their work to overcome added challenges, the indomitable human spirit, those who support their effort? I really like this. I think it would also be appropriate to include the reasons shared in a recent post on why we enjoy the solitude, the wilderness, how it sustains and nourishes our souls, helps to provide a peace that assists in dealing with everyday stresses. And how it can assist in working out some of the problems we get from living in our advanced but fractious society - one of the biggest reasons would be to be away from the tv and the Trumpet.

I've got some of the "overcoming challenges" stuff with some of the guys going already. Great suggestion! And yeah, I think genuine reflection about what backpacking does for us and why we head out there would be an essential piece.
