I had to do the math and figure out what you were basing the 50k number off of. I found it at the bottom of the forum list.
Is that tally just on the new site? I'd be curious what the count is/was on the old one.

I'd be curious what the count is/was on the old one. It depends on which old one you mean. The count got reset a few times in software updates. The longest-lived version must have had around a million posts. We used to be a much bigger community.

FYI: This forum was a complete, start from scratch project; nothing brought in from the old forum. The post count started at zero, and we had one member: me! It's a very different (and I think better) forum than the last version.

I am not sure what old site, I guess the precursor to this forum? I recall the Good Morning Thread and the different editions that went through. At one point the original thread got jammed or maxed out and another one was started. If I recall correctly that was all on the same "site" I am thinking of. Then this one started up and there was a whole sub-forum in honor of Mataharihiker.
Ah yes, ice cream. Vanilla with Hershey's chocolate syrup (dark chocolate) is coming right up after my dinner of smoked trout and fried diced potatoes and onions.

Yes, all that was on a sub-set of the Backpacker Mag web site. They kept messing with the software, making it less and less functional each time, until it crashed completely, and died of neglect. So BP2Go hauled off and invented this one out of whole cloth. It doesn't really have anything to do with the magazine now, and the FreeForums software works quite nicely.

Hmm. I am confused. I wasn't really "following" all the changes. I have been on the various forums in waves, then some periods of inactivity. So I guess I am not following what the deal is with the magazine. I am aware of it, and had a subscription to it at one point in time. I was always under the impression that the community here was a spin off of the magazine/main web page. That is still how I access this forum now.
I assume from the discussion of the "magazine" interaction that the management for the "magazine" was the same management over the forums and that management changed with the new "forum"?
I do recall at one point posting on the old forum as this one was already off the ground. Someone replied to my message over there and recommended I register on the, then, new forum and post there instead. I've been over here since.

Someone replied to my message over there I know this gets confusing, but here goes: Yes the old forum was a connected part of the magazine site (on the same server). A "redesign" started over two years ago went about as well as a junior high class project! As moderator there, I spent a year trying to be useful, finally offered to build a sample to show an alternative. I was given the okay! I built this forum, simply following the basic content form that was familiar. To my surprise, the very day I signaled HQ that the sample was ready, the real forum crashed! HQ asked me to open the test forum to the public, and here we are. For several months, the old forum (somehow revived but never fixed) was still letting people sign up and post! But since I was not able to get HQ to shut it down, I visited to find any members posting questions that would never get answered. I went to some effort to find email info for many, sending a message to invite them to the NEW forum to ask again. Since nobody else at HQ even looks at this stuff (there or here) I think your story is one of the invites I sent. Yes, the magazine finally closed the old forum and changed the single link from there to here. But in a strange twist, the forum is separate, using excellent software on separate servers. I am the "management", and yes, there is link to the magazine.
