Thanks for having me - I just got back from slow hiking the Teton Crest Trail and it was mind-blowing. I will definitely have to go back! I hike with the following paradims: 1) Don't look down privies....EVER...you can't unsee THAT 2) Skirts were made for hiking 3) Wilderness is medicine. I have been hiking and car camping for many years, and this is my second summer backpacking. So far I have done extended backpacking trips to RMNP, Northern Minnesota, and just recently the Tetons. I have done 8 or 9 shorter trips in the Midwest and found that I love every season. I guess I was born to be a wild woman, LOL! I am going to check out the rest of the site more fully once I get my gear unpacked. Happy Trails!

Welcome from the desert Southwest.
Backpacking is probably the most rounded of outdoor activities. It exercises muscles, heart, lungs and mind.

You never know who will get bit by the backpacking bug. Or why they get bit. You can't predict how they will get bit. It's not something which can be seen in the face or anticipated by previous actions. It either happens or it doesn't. No big deal. Some people love Nascar races. No explaining it.
Once the backpacking bug bites, THEN becomes the challenge to arrange your life around this one desire. Why? Because backpacking requires big blocks of uninterrupted time.

Thanks, desertdweller! I have never been to the Southwest, but maybe next year. Where are your favorite places to pitch a tent down there?

Because backpacking requires big blocks of uninterrupted time. That's, basically, why I primarily do solo backpacking. When in school I'd arrange to do a two or three day hike with anyone who wanted to go. As the time came close, more and more folks couldn't come up with the "big blocks of uninterrupted time." But, dang it, if I'm going to miss classes, I'm going to do the hike. I've been mostly solo hiking for the past 38 years. These days, though, I've had some company on the longer hikes.

Thanks, desertdweller! I have never been to the Southwest, but maybe next year. Where are your favorite places to pitch a tent down there? It really depends on the time of the year. In summer, like now, I'll go to places with higher elevation, like Flagstaff area or the White Mountains. One thing about Arizona is that it has every microclime from low desert to tundra. That's 800 feet in elevation to over 11,000 feet. In winter, I go to the low isolated desert ranges, like the Kofa Mountains north of Yuma.

That is the truth, tipiwalter! I didn't grow up in an outdoor family at all, in fact. I have certainly got it bad!! I am already contemplating locations for my next trip and my gear isn't even unpacked.

Welcome to our little corner of the internet, from the Great White North.
I've heard good things about the Tetons, so I'm hoping to see more photos.

A loop in Teton was already on the list, but you all are making me change my route.
