Why sweetbreads are neither sweet nor bread. Every time I hear the word "sweetbreads," I can't help but think of Hannibal Lecter. Same goes for fava beans and a nice chianti. Lol!

Northwestern University is located in the Midwest. In our nation's past, that part where Chicago is located was part of the North West Territories.

I also don't know what it is about shopping either, unless it's at Home Depot - then I understand perfectly! Home Depot is good. REI is better. Actually, I'm pretty good at groceries, too. What I don't understand is how some women can LIKE shopping for clothes. I think it's the most depressing and demoralizing thing I can do. That's why the gods invented the personal shopper. Then ONLY stuff you'll look good in do you ever even try on. That was a revelation to my "dressing up is a clean t-shirt" gf when her promotion meant presentations in front of the San Diego City Council.... a forgery expert friend that did a lot of court expert testimony and so also had a job required credibility look issue suggested it. Wonders.

Why do we drive our cars on the parkway, yet park our cars on the driveway?

That's why the gods invented the personal shopper. Then ONLY stuff you'll look good in do you ever even try on. it's true that the last time I bought anything beyond a national park t-shirt was when a couple of girlfriends dragged me to the store, picked out things for me to try on, and told me when they looked good. And I kind of had fun, since I got to spend some time with a couple of girlfriends. Maybe that's the appeal of shopping?

Why is there an Interstate Highway in Hawaii? Because then it qualified for federal funding. If it was not declared an interstate highway the state would have had to pay for it.

I once served as part of a protective team for the President of Madigascar. I've served in a similiar capacity for plenty of famous and or powerful folks. Few of them have left a lasting impression on me, but the President of Madigascar did.
He was punctual. He seemed to be polite. He was in good health, I think he spoke English pretty well. None of that matters. What matters is what he didn't do.
See, if I was the President of Madigascar, I wouldn't have business cards. I'd have a flunky with a big canvas bag. When I met people, especially helpful people, I'd say,
"Hi, I'm Jim. I'm the President of Madagascar. I really appreciate your help. Would you like a lemur?"
The helpful person would almost certainly accept and feel a great honor as the flunky opened the canvas bag and the President of Madigascar handed them a lemur all of their own. Photographers would take pictures. The President would smile, the helpful person would smile, the lemur would wonder where the hell it was and if anyone had some lunch it could have. It would be lovely.
That didn't happen though. There was no flunky with a canvas sack. There were no helpful people smiling with their new friend. There were no lemurs...
I have never understood why not.

This thread proves that the world is a dark, messy place.

I once served as part of a protective team for the President of Madigascar. "Madagascar" I'm headed there in September. I'm going with my wife, so it won't be a backpacking trip - backpacking/camping aren't her things in general, and she has nerve/spine/pain issues which basically prohibit it. It's also a guided trip with a fixed itinerary, albeit with an excellent company with great guides, but if you have any insights or recommendations I'd love to hear them. It may not be the only time I go there... That didn't happen though. In my limited experience, this is often one of the differences between big honkin' countries like the U.S. with all sorts of security and protocols, and so-called second and third world countries. They're small. They're down to earth. They can't afford all that fancy stuff. The U.S. has a population of over 300 million, and last year had a GDP of over 18 trillion USD (34,000 USD/capita). In the same year Madagascar had a GDP of 10 billion USD (400 USD/capita). I have never understood why not. Because many - not all - small countries/regions/populations/ethnicities/whatever are far more down to earth than dominant countries like the U.S. I may disagree with @ben2world on many issues, but this is one thing that he's been trying to drill into us over the years, and I agree.
