And so the thread drifts into the usual... and I fail to link my gif of Michael Jackson eating popcorn to make it complete.

You're right, you're very late to the thread.

Meanwhile, I've moved on to purchase the pad that will probably continue to serve us well enough.

I'll be a son of a gun. I came to this forum to get away from the angry, nagging, sniveling malcontents that were constants at my last forum home. I thought, "Backpacking forums should be relatively free of b.s. People who hike in the woods and use tree leaves for toilet paper can't be bad." I see now that when I got to the fork in the trail, I should have taken it.

When you're out on a long winter trip without resupply (no town visits) and it's consistently 0F at night, you can't afford to have an inflatable Pad die because fixing such a pad in the field is often impossible. And you can't rightly sleep on the rock hard frozen ground for the next 15 days. I spent over a month on the Greenland ice sheet last year in temps at -30 and below. I was 200 miles minimum from the nearest village. I used a self-inflating pad the entire time and I couldn't imagine not using one. Closed cell is decent for warmth but sucks for comfort. On a side note, My Thermarests have never delaminated. I get bored of them before they fail. Scratch that. I've never had one fail other than the occasional pin hole repair.
