Surprised to see so many people from Texas on this Thread! Where are your favorite spots to backpack in Texas? I lived in Fort Worth for 4 years during college and I found the backpacking scene left a lot to be desired. I was pleasantly surprised by Arkansas though, what a beautiful place. I backpack Guadalupe Mountains National Park more than anywhere, but I also enjoy Big Bend National Park and recently, Big Bend Ranch State Park.

Just wanted to say hello to everyone. Along with backpacking I enjoy motorcycles and hunting. I use a hammock for camping and enjoy making most of my equipment myself. Howdy! Have you ever done any motorcycle camping? I've always thought a dirt bike would make a good "mule" to get through really rough roads even jeeps struggle with.

I actually have a pop up camper I can pull behind my bike and love it. Hammock camping also works fantastic because they don't take up a lot of room in the truck. I have not done any dirt bike camping tho.... the way I ride I would probably end up tearing up the equipment and hurting myself. I tend to ride my dirt bike for all its worth when off road I will put some pics in the Dropbox folder so you can see them.

Where are your favorite spots to backpack in Texas? New Mexico. . I do some backpacking in Texas State Parks (especially Lost Maples and Hill Country State Natural Areas), but they're small and crowded. I love Big Bend, but I usually backpack with my dog, so National Parks (including the Guads) are out. I did 50 miles of the Ouachita Trail this past winter, it was pretty nice.

I will sound like a geezer here but what is dropbox?
Sooners and Longhorns; has to be a good thing.
Toejam has a great way of cutting to the proverbial chase. There is a wealth of knowledge here of where you want togo. Lots of great folks like Deborah, Lamebeaver, Swims With With Trout, Reminisence up in Denver and Woodsie and Mt. Girl just a little further south; you're not a sociopath, right? Just asking cause if you are, they'll kill ne.
And now I see all these Tejas !@#$%^&*()_+es. We can be anywhere, and the trail is second greatest joy for many of us.
May it be for you.
Where's my beer?

LOL. Dropbox is a online storage that you can let others access. I placed the link in a post further up. You should be able to just click on it and open the file. I put number of pics and a backpack weight calculator in it. As for sociopath... NO. I am actually a police officer.... I do sometimes worry about my sanity after 24 yrs tho...lol

Nah. Think either your thread ran out of steam, or... SQUIRREL! Happens to the best of them.

Greetings from the Buckeye State! I've done plenty of hiking in Oklahoma and I highly recommend Gloss Mountains State Park which is about 40 minutes west of Enid. It's my favorite place I've been in Oklahoma so far.

I was raised in Enid, OK and "discovered" Nature there for the first time at a young age. I was in a cub scout troop and we backpacked in the area and I remember pulling a 9 mile day once which was long for us. We hit all the cool spots around Enid at the time: Woolaroc museum, Great Salt Plains lake, Roman Nose state park, you name it. Even did a trip to the Wichita Mountains near Lawton and camped on Mt Scott. My first camping trip? I'm the little tyke next to my Dad at Great Salt Plains lake, around 1951. Fast forward to 1955 and I emerge from Great Salt Plains Lake.

Since my wife is from Edmond, I have been hiking all across the state as well (avoiding long days with the in-laws). I would have to say that while Gloss and Roman Nose have some pretty neat scenery and I have enjoyed them, its sad that Gloss is tiny @1sq mile and Roman Nose has been overdeveloped 18 hole golf course, mini-golf , pools, tennis, volleyball, fishing, canoeing, etc., etc., etc... I think that is one of the reasons I am looking forward to moving to Ada is that it puts me pretty close to the SE corner and equidistant to hiking in the Witchita Mt Wildlife Refuge.

Me and some friends were drawn to hunt Great Salt Plans several years back and found that that lake is extremely shallow. I have hiked McGee Creek and it's fantastic and good for weekend trips. Planning on going to Ouachita trail during fall foliage this year and doing the entire trail when retire next spring.
