In looking for the ever 'cheaper' sports goo, my wife bought some Reese's spread.
For several months this evil stuff sat on a shelf, awaiting a backpacking trip. This past Memo day was close enough.
Yes, to me it was good and a cost reasonable alternative to sports goo but then I looked over to see the spoon sticking out of my wife's mouth with that eyes wide open kind of look, that let me know, 'this stuff is evil.'
And the package reads 'DO NOT REFERIGATE.'

Perhaps, raw honey in a squeeze bottle? I always carry that backpacking, but prefer the honey on short breaks with peanut butter and/or pita bread, and while hiking snacking on a high calorie bar like EAS Myoplex with slow carbs, fast carbs, protein and MCT oil, unless really behind on calories.

Was it the taste? Texture? Oh, it is so good its hard to put down. A jar of Reesee's spread has 1900 calories. My wife tried hiding from me that after 1.5 days her jar was empty until she wanted to know if she could finish off my opened jar. The taste is great and the texture is good.

Also good on English muffin Pretty much any kind of flat bread that is convenient to carry backpacking. This is an example, where I will pay a little more(but not much) for a local raw, unfiltered wildflower honey from a Fl. farm.Though I do have a blackberry honey from the Pacific NW ,currently,as well. On my first bike tour to N.Fl., I would stop in at the roadside huts that sold citrus to the tourists and pick up OJ and raw honey ,which I would down straight to gain a burst of cycling speed and withstand the Fl. heat.

I have mixed honey, apple juice and cocoa powder together for a gu. I boil the apple juice down to 1/2, then, turning the heat down add 1/3 (of the boiled down apple juice qty) of honey and 1/3 qty of cocoa powder, mix well and put into a squeeze container for use on the trail.

That doesn't sound bad.I think most gus use glucose and maltodextrin as fast/slow carbs and those can be purchased in quantity at beer making supply stores(and no doubt online).I once tried maltdextrin in my protein shakes but oatmeal works much better for me.
About as creative as I have gotten were energy balls of whey protein, peanut butter and honey with some oatmeal added in.But, energy bars ,with things like fruit and oats, seem to work well for me and as cheap and high quality as some of them have gotten, I have had no incentive to make my own.
But,I think the key is to rotate/vary the bars/trail mixes/gu concoctions ,whatever,as I find when I think I have the ideal formula that is about the same time I start getting tired of those foods.

Have you tried Moose Goo? I made some and it wasn't my thang, but some people like it, and you can vary the recipe to your tastes.

We have tried a variation of Moose Goo.
As an FYI: Maltodextrin can be had from the Bicycle shops.

My, actual, field 'test' of the Reesee's spread as an energy gel, this past weekend, for me, 2 thumbs up.
