The holiday season is coming around. A time when a few people give out those Hickory Farms gifts. I like to collect those little gems for the backpacking season. The gift boxes have cheeses and meats that do not need kept in the fridge. A part of me looks forward to the end of the holiday season whe those Hickory Famrs gift items go on sale. In tracking the current offerings of Hickory Farms, I ran across offerings by The Swiss Colony. The Swiss Colony prices, to me, are a bit more reasonable then current Hickory Farms offerings. I ordered a 6 piece gift box to check out the quality..

I can find small non refrigerated sausage-like meats in my local grocer. Not all of them are like dry salami. Most though.
And I have had good luck with small waxed cheeses.

And I have had good luck with small waxed cheeses. I have often found that small waxed cheeses taste like library paste. Or something. Not so much like cheese. I'll take my chances with sharp cheddar, and maybe some other, drier cheeses.

taste like library paste. I'll have to leave that to your much more experienced palate. I would have no idea what library paste would taste like. In honor of the Ninja Librarian, of course!

Actually, if my memory from kindergarten is correct, paste has more flavor than some of those cheeses, by a wide margin.

Just discovered, Chello Whisps, parmesan cheese crisps. Very lightweight, though I'd repackage them for backpacking. A serving of 15 chips is listed to have a 100 calories. I find them to be very tasty with a nice strong cheese flavor.

Have you tried Moose Goo? I made some and it wasn't my thang, but some people like it, and you can vary the recipe to your tastes. I tried to follow @tdale's suggestion about homemade being cheaper than storebought. Unfortunately, I found my food processor didn't have enough horsepower to handle the moose. I should have quartered it first.

Get a Saturn V Rocket Blender! Luckily there's one of those just up the street.

I have received some packets of Creme Brulee and Dark Chocolate Cheese Cake for next seasons backpacking breakfasts or lunches.

Get a Saturn V Rocket Blender! Years ago I worked at Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA). There was an auction one day and a coworker and I went over to see what was up. There was a huge variety of stuff. A truck, blah, blah, blah... and a mockup of the Apollo lunar orbiter. I think it was about half size. My friend wanted to bid on it but figured his wife would kill him. I told him that if he won it he'd be the coolest dad for a thousand miles. Can you imagine? "Billy, stop bugging me and go outside and play!" "OK, OK! I'm going over to Mr. Jim's to play in the lunar orbiter." He passed on it. When he got home and told his wife about it she said "I wouldn't have a problem with that." <SMACK> On top of that, one of his sons has gone into engineering. And yeah, the Saturn V was pure awesomeness.

Sometimes I stay in that motel next to the rocket museum in Huntsville. I need to get enough time for a better look someday.
