Ha! I'm not interested in one for backpacking, but I know a guy who's going to be very, very keen about this for future field campaigns.

It is about a year away, if not delayed, so plenty of time to think about it. After a very quick look it appears that with the 30m power-on for 1 battery you can make 6x 500ml meals. That is six single portions . After that you need another battery or a solar panel good enough to charge the existing battery. In practice I would think you still need at least two batteries, one in use and the other one charging up. The unit is "under 1.5kg" I would translate that to at least 3 lbs. About 12"x4" .

I could actually see having one of those in the car-camping outfit.

I've hiked with some folks who would wait in line for a solar charged hair dryer...
... once.
Maybe I should forward them this.

Husband says he'd use it on a Scout camp out. But $200? Maybe wait until the price comes down a bit and use the stove.

But $200? Maybe wait until the price comes down a bit and use the stove. Good stoves are almost half that so not too much of a stretch. Would I get or use one? I finally bought a new stove after using the same one from the mid-90s....

Good stoves are $100?
Gee, my Snow Peak Giga was $40, almost nine years ago, and it still works great. The cat can stove was free... I fed the cat and made a stove.

Good stoves are almost half that so not too much of a stretch. Hm. I don't think our stove was that much.

That's actually somewhat intriguing.
Like most, not for backpacking, but for other out-of-home applications.

$200 means that while I might consider it intriguing and possible useful car-camping, I wouldn't actually buy one. I'd rather put the $$ towards backpacking gear.
