I was invited to a civil war reenactment last weekend and brought my camera to the event. I was informed it was only a small reenactment but being my first I thought it was fun regardless. I'm actually studying colloidal photography especially with tin types considering I own a 4x5 antique field camera but I couldn't resist photoshopping my images to resemble tin type photos. Granted, a tin type from the civil war days would of took several seconds to expose which is why we never saw many "action" photographs. So here's my cheats. A friend that invited me to the event along with his canon. Seems you can order barrels and if you have decent woodworking skills, you can fabricate the axle and parts. These guys have quite the investment in these rigs. The confederates had two cannons in this particular battle. Ultralights from the day. This rebel seems to be enjoying being toted off the battleground. There were allot of pretty things there as well.

Fun. But I always wonder why more people want to be confederates than Union in these things. Was that the case here?

I don't remember most rebels being this well fed. ...but they held there ground. I'm not sure if he drew the short straw or what but this photo came out a little to much like the horrific historical photos. ...and here come the yankees. This young man was all business. Just chewing the fat.

I didn't get to talk to folks about that but I suppose it has something to do with the cost of uniforms considering the union uniforms seem to need to match where as the confederates were not. Just speculation on my part though.

Fun!
When is the slave auction reenactment? Those are a hoot too.
I'm a big War of Jenkins Ear reenactor. And a Jugurthine War reenactor too.

I'll bet firing those cannon off is a hoot! I've been thinking the same thing, but I want to launch live rounds so I'm probably better off without the experience. Glad you had a good time daveb

I'll bet firing those cannon off is a hoot! I've was invited to be a "cannon guy" in a couple of weeks from now for the big Jefferson, Tx show. I think I'm going pass considering I'd rather move around and photograph stuff. My friend said it's about $20 a pop to fire the cannon except for the ones he'll be doing for the night fire in Jefferson where he adds extra fire work powder in order to get cool blast colors. I'm already looking forward to the Jefferson show.

I've never understood reenactments. War is horrific and doesn't need glamorizing and celebrating. Sorry but the first thing that came into my mind was from the movie "Tremors". The scene is they're prepping things to fight the worms and the prepper/survivalist guy Burt Gummer is asked where he got the stuff to make some pipe bombs. He replies "A few household chemicals and the right knowledge and some cannon fuse.". "Why do you have cannon fuse?". Baffled look... "For my cannon...."

Actually looks kind of fun. The photos look great and the grainier ones even look somewhat authentic. :-P
Outside of firing the canon, I don't think I'd care much for that hobby though. It's a bit like RenFair meets LARPing, but with stricter overall requirements. I do enjoy putting together a good costume though.
