I've never understood reenactments. War is horrific and doesn't need glamorizing and celebrating. This was my first one to attend and I share the same sentiments. Having said that, I can't wait for the next one. Jefferson, Tx the weekend of the 30th if anyone is interested. I do believe there will be several Jim Bobs there and I have had the nickname Jethro a few times in my life so I expect to fit right in.

Outside of firing the canon, I don't think I'd care much for that hobby though. It's a bit like RenFair meets LARPing, but with stricter overall requirements. I do enjoy putting together a good costume though It's definitely a click thing from what I gathered, the camps set up were full of folks that all knew each other from states and have done this before. My girlfriend was most interested in staying for the dance at the end of the day considering the time period dresses we were seeing. I hope to get shots of that at the next one.

I've never understood reenactments. War is horrific and doesn't need glamorizing and celebrating. Some people don't get fireworks either. I'm not sure why, but some of us just like things that go BOOM! I have an original 1861 Springfield (Norfolk contract rifle for those who are into this kind of stuff) and shoot it on rare occasions. It's amazingly accurate. With black powder, you get lots of smoke. I've never been to a reenactment, but can see the educational and entertainment value.

I kind of get the reenactments. I mean, I'm fascinated by history, and these things let you bring it to life. Not thrilled by the war side of it, and have trouble imagining choosing to be a confederate (that opens a whole can of worms), but I do get it.
Plus: things that go boom.

I think I'd enjoy visiting the various battlegrounds, when I have more time.
One of my relatives was killed in the war, and I'd like to see where it happened, and where he's buried.
Does anyone know if any of them have backpacking trails?

have trouble imagining choosing to be a confederate You don't live in Texas. Unfortunately, it is very easy for me to imagine. BTW, the OP used the wrong name for the war. As any good Texan should know, the correct name is "The War of Northern Aggression".

Nice photos!!
When we were homeschooling our kids, we went to a reenactment. Kind of odd to have one here in central California though.

Lots of re-enactors here in the MD/VA area. While I share some of Lonewolf's view on the horrors of war and what may appear to be glorifying it, there are positive things to it as well such as educational value. It's difficult to teach the complexities of battle and the re-enactments provide a full sensory experience as to why things developed the way that they did.

Does anyone know if any of them have backpacking trails? There used to be a trail through the battleground at Kennesaw Mountain in Kennesaw, GA. Whether or not it can still be hiked, I do not know. As Boy Scouts, we did our 20 mile hike through that battleground. Actually, a quick search revealed this: www.atlantatrails.com/kennesaw-mountain-trails/

My g^3-uncle was killed at Rocky Face Ridge, near Dalton. I could visit it (appears to be a local park there) and Kennesaw Mountain on the same trip.
