I just bought a pair of undies made from bamboo. Tried them out today, and they were definitely more comfy than my Ex-O undies, though that may be more about cut than fabric. Not sure about availabilitiy, as I bought them in a pharmacy in New Zealand. Boody Eco Wear; appears to be an Aussie company. Full briefs is what they had, so it’s what I got, and though they are a bit higher cut than I like (not really grandma panties, though), I greatly appreciated that they have full coverage in the backside. I will have to see how they do at rinsing and drying while hiking.

I'm curious if the bamboo ones are slow to dry. My husband and I love bamboo socks but they take the longest to dry than any of our other socks.

They are better than cotton for drying, but not as fast-drying as the wholly synthetic undies. They seem within the range of reasonable for backpacking. I do notice that they have lost a lot of their softness with washings; not enough to be uncomfortable, but not quite as nice. Which is actually also true of my ExO undies.

Lemme just say, I'm new to the forum and this thread makes me so very happy. :D Underwear struggles are real, lol. Add me to the boyshort club! I've never been able to find a bikini cut that makes me happy and hiking in a thong just feels weird to me. After much trial and error I found these on Amazon and they've worked very well: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GK7FERA/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1They wick very well and I've never had any issues with odor. They dry very quickly after rinsing.

So you all make me wonder: should I try some different brands of boy shorts, or are they just not made for the, uh, more mature figure?

So you all make me wonder: should I try some different brands of boy shorts, or are they just not made for the, uh, more mature figure? I had to go through a few tries to find some that worked. I think if you're more of an apple shape (which I am) they might work better than if you carry a lot of weight in your thighs and booty. My sister is pear shaped and she HATES boy shorts. She says they ride up and all the fabric piles into the crease above her thighs.

than if you carry a lot of weight in your thighs and booty. Me. Boy shorts = big nope. I don't want to have to think about my underwear, and boy shorts just made me aware that I had them on. It was seriously annoying. I won't wear any with a seam running down the middle, either. Who designs those?

Most recent hike - 8 days in the Grand Canyon. I took 3 pairs (i.e. wore one, 2 spares) of Gap "Breathe Hipsters". 20g/0.7oz each, 74% Polyester, 18% Lyocell, 8% Spandex. They're inexpensive (they always seem to be on sale), super comfortable, quick to dry. Very little difference (for me) between the "bikini" and "hipster".
A couple of thoughts. - I like taking underwear that I normally wear. No surprises. - Take different colors. Easier to quickly identify which ones are clean/dirty, keep track of rotation. - Go for fabrics that can be washed/dried in backcountry and retain shape/texture/stretch.

I recently hiked in Reebok hipsters that I purchased at Costco - 5 prs for something like $12. I didn't air dry them so I have no idea what the timeframe would be, but they were very comfortable. I never noticed or thought about them -- they stayed in place and did great under a hip belt.

This conversation has been dormant for a long time, but I do have something to add. After years of sticking with Ex-Officio briefs, I recently got a pair of these Patagonia briefs, an impulse purchase while on the road. They are very comfortable and dry super fast, in part because there's no double-fabric in the crotch. But the price! Insane. I did have to remove the tag--and then turn them inside out because the tiny remains of the tag were very irritating to me. I have the world's most sensitive skin, so these things are more the norm than otherwise. I wish they'd just print the info on the fabric and save us all the annoyance of tags. www.backcountry.com/patagonia-active-hipster-brief-womens

A follow-up on those Patagonia undies. They seem to have lost some of their elasticity after only a couple of washings, so they tend to slide down—not something I’m happy about. Once II start to sweat they stay put :D

Have you tried Duluth Trading Co, rebeccad? They have several styles and "features," including true boxers for women (much better than boy shorts!). We've recently moved back to Wisconsin, just across the river from Minnesota, and I've discovered Duluth Trading. Happy with them so far.
