I use pee rags and second everything rebeccad says about their use. I have a dedicated bandana for this purpose. They really do not smell when hung on your pack, even when I can't rinse them. Remember that urine is sterile to begin with, and that sunshine is not friendly to bacteria or yeast growth. I just tie one end to a carabinier and attach to my pack. It leaves no trace, doubles as a "wet wipe" at water sources, and you don't have to worry about running out of TP. It miraculously never smells like urine - oh, the joy of sunshine and fresh air!

I've got a booty, and it's gotten a little of control with all the steep terrain I've hikes this summer so I just let it be free in Balanced Tech synthetic thongs. They are $15 for three pair, and they are so comfy I wear them a lot. Not the most durable - the waistbands are shot after 6 months or so. I add a *changeable* cotton crotch with bamboo-lined cotton Earth girls. This prevents the undies from getting funky, and enables you to use the undies a second day if it is too cold to face getting naked, or if you lack privacy. I want both quick dry synthetic AND comfy, absorbent cotton, dagnabbit! I always hike in HeatGear leggings and a quick-dry yoga or outdoor skirt. I can pee as fast as my husband with this system. With the lined cotton pad on, you can drip dry and change later if there is not much privacy on the trail and you only have a few seconds to go. If someone walks past, they think I am stopping to smell the flowers.

Do you stick to the same style you normally wear? Or are some cuts better than others for hiking? I confess I'm a thong gal but I think I might need to get a few pair with more coverage for various reasons. Especially if I want to swim with others around!

The big thing to check is if it's comfy under your pack. Though having some that can double as a swim suit in mixed company isn't bad. Also, if your regular undies are cotton, you'll want to find something that dries better.
I have often carried a pair that's a little different for dedicated camp/night wear--that might be one solution to your need for something more discreet at times!

Did a little underwear field test. Ordered both UA and ExOfficio underwear, in bikini. Did not like the UA, they just rode up too much during a hike (and dammit it's hard to pick your seat with a full pack on) but were fine for daily wear. I think the leg openings just dont have enough enforcement (no stitching at all) and stretched too much.
The ExOfficio bikini was perfect! Stayed put and breathed well. No seat picking!

I am a thong fan. Balanced Tech thongs from Amazon, to be specific. Uber comfy and seem to be funk resistant.

Found another cheap alternative at Target, this time with no seams and no cotton. Not quite as fast-drying as my mesh ExO undies, but smoother. Haven't yet tested them with a pack, of course. These. They also come in bikini. Sizes may run a little small, and my biggest concern is that they may not stay up well. The undies cited in my original post have worked well, but I'd say aren't holding up super well. Still, they were dirt cheap. These from Champion were $20 for 3, so decidedly less cheap.

Sizes may run a little small, and my biggest concern is that they may not stay up well. I have very similar Champion undies and I like them a lot. No trouble staying up, and I'm happy with how they are holding up. They are super stretchy so they look very small out of the package. I don't remember if I bought a size up or not.

The new undies are definitely too slidey. I'll have to either size down or try another sort--maybe the ones C&C suggests above.
I don't mind my ExO undies, but they are cut a little skimpy across the butt, and they do have seams. I'd like to improve on that.

I bought a pack of Stoic thongs and love them! They've worked well for me so far, I should do a dry test on them to see how long they take. I love the fit and wicking ability of them. I bought mine from backcountry here

I bought a pack of Stoic thongs and love them! I think one is either a thong person or not. No butt floss for me! Same with boy shorts--some rave about how comfy they are, but when I tried them--oy, vey! They were awful.
