The IOC should have gone with both teams suggestion of just doing two bronze. If they're going back to set it right, it should be 3 bronzes. An additional one to the (other) Romanian gymnast that they penalized for going out-of-bounds when she clearly didn't. Without that deduction, she would have beaten Chiles and her teammate. What a circus.

I agree. It's a mess.

Ouch! He did torch them, though.

I enjoyed the coverage of this Olympics much more than any I can recall. . . . It's been a bittersweet experience for me. It all reminds me so much of when I was young.

I enjoyed the coverage of this Olympics much more than any I can recall. . . . It's been a bittersweet experience for me. It all reminds me so much of when I was young. I lettered in cross country as a teenager but now it almost hurts to see how fast any of the runners cover so much ground at such an incredible pace. Yet it really is a thrill as well to see them doing it. That feeling is still there. Sis-in-law read about some 100 year old woman who was still running and we cautioned her against the notion as she is mid 70s. She is very stubborn and promptly went out and injured herself, walking on a cane the Dr gave her now. She still insists she will be back to normal in a few days. You can’t tell someone with Scottish ancestry anything. lol Well we still got in our 10k today and even photographed an immaculate Gila monster but we did it at hiking speed with no running.

“"The time-stamped, video evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics Sunday evening shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted," USA Gymnastics said in its statement.” Apple News. The appeal was rejected on procedural grounds.

"USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented." - The US wasn't even invited to the original hearing!
This medal has become so tainted, Chiles should throw it in a river and be done with it. At least for a couple of millenia, when some small-statured person finds it, and starts calling it "Precious".

It's a sad fact of life that occasionally the very people most responsible for assuring fairness prove incapable of providing it when their own mistakes created the problem to begin with.

“Judged” “sports” are silly on the face of it.
The athleticism is often awe inspiring. The so called competition in comparison is garbage. Arbitrary and often nonsensical judging with an almost entirely arbitrary “score”. Complex routines that go on for minutes and there’s a 0.01” difference? Like that’s real.

My interpretation of this statement is that the timing of the coach's appeal was immaterial, the original score should have remained unchanged, even if was in error, and the judges were wrong to have changed it, even if they knew it was a mistake.

NBC News reports that the head of the Court of Arbitration panel that stripped Jordan Chiles of the bronze medal was a Romanian advocate, Hamid Gharavi, who represents Romania in other controversies, thus raising questions of his vested interest in awarding the medal to a Romanian gymnast. And to reiterate how unusual this situation is, "Chiles is the only gymnast in history to be stripped of an Olympic medal for reasons other than age falsification or failed drug tests."
ETA: Further irregularities noted. Previous to the Court of Arbitration's consideration of the controversy, notice intended for USA was sent to the wrong officials, thus allowing the proceedings to be conducted without USA's presence and without USA's opportunity to defend Chiles' score or object to Romania's presidency of the Arbitration panel. Just my opinion but I don't think anyone should be stripped of a medal because of an error by an official/judge/ref/etc., that results in a change in the medal standings. They should award another medal.
I'm talking about indisputable errors, not "misjudgments". And I reject the suggestion that giving out multiple medals would "dilute" the award.
In all of the political brouhaha, they're forgetting the fact that the gymnasts are 17, 18 and 23 years old, and they're arbitrarily breaking these kids' hearts.
Btw, I've been reading that Romania had requested awarding bronze to all three gymnasts. They say that their intent was to advocate for their athletes, not to take the medal away from Chiles.

They should award another medal. I couldn't agree more! At this stage, how is this helpful for any of the two gymnasts? Even if one of them gets their medal, I'm sure they'll always feel for what happened to the other.
