Last Fall I convinced my wife to move from Florida. We chose the Olympic Peninsula. Drove across country twice. Once with my car and then with the truck, while towing her car on a trailer. As we settle in here, I am looking forward to a few short BP trips.

I guess that's about as far as one can move within the lower 48, huh?
I'm sure you know this already, but the Hoh trail is a tremendous day hike (or BP) in the "off" season--it doesn't really matter if it's raining or not, and is almost always snow-free in winter, at least for a few miles.

Last Fall I convinced my wife to move from Florida. Are you comfortable talking about some of the reasons you choose to move? I definitely understand wanting to move for political reasons. I can also see because of weather. Hot, humid with massive hurricanes is no fun to me. Alligators are kind of scary too.

Sounds like you’re coming home to me whether you’ve lived there before or not. Congratulations on your move.

Congratulation! That sounds to me like a very postive move.

ErnieW I never found gators scary. They are just not aggressive, and even when I tipped my canoe over in the same river we paddled to see gators I wasn’t thinking I was in danger from them. We moved to Florida originally because my wife has a disability that she mistakenly thought the warm weather would help her symptoms. I offered Tucson as an alternative but she claimed to not like the desert. I was miserable for 10 years and frequently told her how much I disliked living there. Finally, I had all I could take, with the political climate, the rising cost of both home and auto insurance, and the whole Eastern Time Zone thing. I wanted to be able to watch live sporting events in their entirety before my bedtime arrived. Yes, I’m an old man of 72. When M had had enough of the hurricanes, and the lack of friends in Florida, she agreed to move. The question was where? I stipulated any place with zero state income taxes, low home insurance, low auto insurance, and close to hills. There were a million registered voters in the county we lived in, so that gave me a good idea of the number of drivers. Home insurance in Sequim 1/4 of what it is on my Fl home, and car insurance is also 1/4 of the cost as there are about 10000 drivers in this county. Property taxes are about the same. She will miss her beach sunsets., and the river paddles with dozens of gators, dozens of turtles, and plenty of birds. What we won’t miss are the neighbors who aren’t shy about supporting fascism, or a distinct threat to our democracy. I will miss working at the polls, as Washington has Vote by Mail. I might even miss winter paddling in Everglades National Park for a week to 10 nights at a time. I’ll miss some of the friends I made there. Our new neighbors here are going out of their way to welcome us, bringing Easter treats, and introducing themselves as we bump into each other. It is an over 55 community, so there are people for her to do more things with. Her disability is still troubling but we are making do. I drove 3300 miles with 2 kayaks and a canoe on top of the car, along with 2 bikes on a trailer hitch rack. Slept in the car on a pad because I wasn’t sure all of that gear would be there in the morning if I got a motel room. 1200 miles on day 1, 1100 on day 2, and 1000 on day 3 to get here. Spent a couple of nights here before flying home. 4 days there before flying out with my wife and her 2 cats. Two nights here before flying home on a Friday. Saturday morning I grabbed a U-Haul truck and had hired help load it. Saturday night my friend who had agreed to help drive flew in and we left early Sunday morning, towing her car on a trailer. That was a 4 day drive with a 75 mile spell of blizzard conditions in SD. Semis in the ditch and some were on their sides kind of conditions. We grabbed a motel room and continued the next day. We parted friends so I’m guessing the drive wasn’t too bad. He had asked me to treat it as one of my own cross country drives, but I’m not so sure he was ready for 4 days of 15 hours in the cab. I now have snow covered mountains out my front windows, and the men’s bb final will be over by 9. We drove to the shores of the strait of Juan de Fuca today and saw a large head swimming in the waters. Sea lion? If it was an otter it was the biggest one I’ve ever seen. I know I’ll be settled in in no time. My wife says she’ll be fine once she starts meeting more people. Cropped, but out my front window. First truck in the ditch. We decided to calll it a day

I’ll add that when friends say they are no longer visiting, or contributing to the tourist economy because of the political climate in your state, it’s time to move.
