I’ll add that when friends say they are no longer visiting, or contributing to the tourist economy because of the political climate in your state, it’s time to move. I seriously considered asking for you for help with a yak trip in the 'glades, or joining us for such. I have no doubt of how much of a fun adventure it would have been with your help. I had friends throughout the South, still have some, that I did outdoor things with. That's changed. Tolerance has diminished incredibly. I started to absolutely loathe the idea of spending a penny in an amusement park based on the Handmaiden's tale. So chalk up my loss to just the sentiment you express. I regret not paddling, but maybe another bucket list thing can happen thanks to you- A trip on the Hoh. The very best wishes for your new home, sounds absolutely perfect and worth the enormous effort you put in.

bluefish If you decide to paddle in Everglades NP someday, I would be happy to assist with planning it, or if the circumstances change quickly, go along. The Hoh river is a starting place for a good BP trip. RumiDude is up this way, as is rebeccad . I’m sure something could be arranged.

We drove to the shores of the strait of Juan de Fuca today. Salish Sea. That's the preferred term now. We live across the water on the Salish. Glad you like Sequim. We almost moved there in 2018 but I realized there'd be even less children every year. The demographics are great if you are a Boomer or Silent Generation however. Btw, you can work on election night and beyond as an independent observer of votes being counted, in Wa state.

Yeah that Juan was a real Fuca I had the boys read up on the while Juan de Fuca this year, for school. It was interesting actually. He was real, and no one believed him that there was a magical strait of islands and natives. Reason why is everyone else sailed by Neah Bay when it was socked in, and huge storms, so the entrance was not visible. We have creative history for sure, that I am teaching. Far more fun than sitting in a classroom getting one sided history.

I applaud your ability to pack up and go! Fully cognizant of your situation, taxes, costs, neighborhood vibe, etc. I have the same consternations here in Utah.
Procrastinating decisive action. Current excuse is two more seasons needed for the crown. Dreaming New Hampshire (homesick, lifelong friends) or Tucson, AZ (practical for a variety of upside reasons).
Congratulations for your daring move and best wishes to both of you going forward!

I wonder if a place that is already hot is a good retirement investment considering the trend in global warming. In Phoenix last summer it had a month of over 100F days with a peak of 119F. It killed like 600 people. This culminated seven years of record breaking heat.

I lived in southern Florida for 9 months and got some serious vertigo from the complete lack of mountains. The Gulf Stream was awesome but the fact that a strong two foot wave could soak everything but the bridge over the intercoastal canal was not my cup of tea. There was no place to walk away from the close crush of humanity like I can easily do most anywhere in the west. I’m in Tucson now for 49 years and while I can understand those who don’t like the desert we have always reveled in it. Florida means flowers and while they don’t always appear here they are a super bloom right now. I’ve gone back to Florida a couple times to visit and have lived or traveled much of this country I’ll never live in Florida again. Living close to mountains and canyons is a necessity. Glad you found yours.

I feel your pain zeke ...literally. Our experience moving from Colorado to Maine last June mirrored yours. Two trips...Getting our home ready to sell with the wettest spring on record...it seemed to rain every day... I told my wife I was NEVER moving again.

Yeah, if anyone will be around late June/early July, I am finally taking my family that direction. I could visit a few folks.
