A bit weird the avian flu egg price spike I thought was quite over. Were these cagefree, organic, cruelty free, free trade, shade grown, chemical free, artisanal eggs from legacy breed hens? Something like that. Or, as the miners of 1849 would have said, eggs.

Speaking of being old-which was on this thread somewhere - remember when you read about the crazy prices during the Gold Rush, when eggs sold for a dollar a piece. Napa Farmer's Market on Saturday: farm fresh eggs, $12 a dozen Well.......apparently, selling eggs to rich wine-drinking Napa folks = Gold Rush :-D (I kid, I kid!)

But I don't agree the problem is restricted to one generation. And I seriously doubt anyone is forcing your son to work a job with no days off. Here's the problem. You are 71. He's 26. It's an entirely different world now. Sure, no one "forces him" but they do mentally. He watches them have no one to hire, he feels bad, he volunteers - they literally beg him to work 6-7 days a week. We live where 65% of the population is retired, and good god do they fricking whine. WHINE so much. Who do they think is going to work these jobs? The local high school has 100 or so kids a year graduating. There is almost no children here - the district is massive in size, but has less than 1.000 children now. There were so many Boomers. There are so few elder Gen Z's out there. It's a lonely world for them. If I hear ONE MORE BOOMER here whine how "no one wants to work" I am going to scream. There isn't enough of them to make every Boomer happy. Gen Z was brought to you by mostly the tiny Gen X cohort.

That's actually normal prices here in Wa state. Eggs in storesare Nearing $7 to 11 a dozen. I sell my eggs, but only to trusted people I actually like. I sell for $5 which is less than the store.

I get two dozen organic eggs at Costco for like $8 Those "organic" eggs at Costco are a lie. Why? Sure, they are fed "organic certified feed" but that's about it. They live horrible lives, stuck in massive sheds. They cauterize their beaks so they won't stab each other to death. They will rarely, if ever, see the outdoors. All males are killed by day 3. All so you can have cheap "healthy" eggs". Oh, and they sanitize the eggs, removing the natural bloom of the egg shell. This is how chickens should live. Free.

On a recent trip to Panera I noticed they didn’t have tables anymore. I asked the register attendant why and she said there just aren’t enough people to hire.
I say let all the illegals and MS13 immigrants work these jobs if they are willing.

For the record, I live in Washington, actually in the big bad city. Yesterday I bought eggs. I paid $3.49 for a dozen cage-free (whatever that means) large white eggs. Prices can go up from there—pay more for brown, which means nothing, and for larger sizes, which I gather are not nice for the hens. So eggs are still a pretty danged cheap protein source, if you avoid places like Whole Foods and the PCC.

Chickens are jerks, so I like extra cruelty with my eggs.
My eggs come from hens that spend all day in cubicles, writing reports and getting performance evaluations. They are forced to listen to the Carpenters, Barney the Dinosaur, Celine Dion, and banjo music in general.
Back in the coop after work, they are surrounded by video screens showing footage of Sarbar's happy chickens living a life they can only dream of. Every once in a while, one of the privileged chickens says "the younger hens don't want to work any more".

It sounds like your son is a member of the first generation that the older generations don't understand. Or is that you that thinks that? Yeah, things are changing, but I'm still alive. I still work for a living. I still hear the stories about how my employers/clients can't find help. I feel sorry for them, too. And I still refuse to let them push me into working longer hours or more days per week. They can take it or leave it. So far they have settled for that because I am still good at what I do. And I'm still clicking on any ole link I want to, because who cares about clickbait? The entire internet is mostly clickbait. That is where this conversation began, as I recall.

It sounds like your son is a member of the first generation that the older generations don't understand. Or is that you that thinks that? It's a MASSIVE gap between 71 and 26. He works very hard - and like what you see on the news and social media...cannot afford to live on his own. That's the real issue at play for elder Gen Z. They are frustrated. I am Gen X, and when I was 18 I could afford an apartment and food on a minimum wage job. Where we live state minimum is over $16 an hour (highest in the US) and he can't afford an apartment. So yeah, he does have it pretty sucky. And it's only going to get worse. Every year of Gen Z is smaller, and Gen Alpha? This was their last year, and ouch....Millneials were not having children.

Yesterday I bought eggs. I paid $3.49 for a dozen cage-free So.....if you pay $3.49 for "cage free eggs" in Wa state those are not quality eggs. All eggs in Wa state have to be "cage free" by law now. They are still in the massive sheds. Only instead of a cage, they stand on a concrete floor. That is it. They cannot even open their wings fully! Cherry Lane and Wilcox are both awful companies, feeding them lousy feed. They never see the outdoors and are purged yearly. BUY LOCAL. Buy where the hens see the sky daily! Where the hens live their lives out. And not turned into dog food every year.

That's why I freeze-dry eggs all summer, for when their butts sit inside in the rain. But seriously, chickens are really awesome birds. If handled often, they love head scritches and being held. My youngest? He can catch any chicken. He is a full on Chicken Daddy. Even the roosters like him. Jerk roosters don't last though. They get a 22 to the chest if they attack. I didn't say I run a hippy love-in here....hahahaha
