Do you know how many vials they administered? Not sure. It's just listed as "drugs" on the claim. Full amount billed, including overnight stay, ER, labs, etc., was $112,676.44. Maybe the biggest takeaway from this whole experience is to be sure and have health insurance.

One thing to keep in mind that a helicopter rescue may not be covered by your health insurance unless it includes air ambulance coverage which most do not. The average cost of a helicopter rescue is about $40,000.

Ok, so the question isn't so much whether I can walk out to the TH as whether I can walk to Mexico.

Good info—thanks for sharing, and of course I’m glad your story had a good ending.
My guess would be that you stepped on or kicked the snake. We have copperheads in my parts and see them fairly regularly. Dogs get bitten much more frequently than humans. The ones in my area, anyway, are fairly loath to strike a person unless you step right on them.
I walk around the yard (in the woods/country) pretty regularly in the dark without a flashlight. Maybe I’ll take this as a cautionary tale.
I’ve often wondered how you would necessarily know if you got a dry bite, but from your description of the pain, I guess it would be pretty obvious.

Holy moly! I was out of the country most of November and am just catching up. I'm so, so glad that you had a good outcome and hope that your recovery is complete. I hate snakes. Just received the insurance claim information for the snakebite treatment. I'll have some significant out of pocket expenses, but most of it was covered, which is a good thing; the antivenom alone was billed at $97,686.86. Yikes. If you live in snake country, be sure you have good insurance. That's crazy, but I'm not too surprised. Vaccines recommended for India included rabies. I learned that if you're bitten and get rabies and start showing symptoms, it's fatal. Seeing that India had the highest incidence of human rabies cases, I decided to get them. Cost was $1,400 for the recommended two shots. Not covered by insurance. When I called to ask my insurance company about coverage, they told me that *if* I'm actually exposed to rabies, then the shots would be covered. Nice to know they wouldn't let me die...

I seem to recall getting the rabies vaccine before our Peru trip. I wonder how long it's good for?

I seem to recall getting the rabies vaccine before our Peru trip. I wonder how long it's good for? From the CDC: Certain people with a higher risk for rabies exposures, such as those who work with potentially infected animals, are recommended to receive vaccine to help prevent rabies if an exposure happens. If you are at higher risk of exposure to the rabies virus:
You should receive 2 doses of rabies vaccine given on days 0 and 7. Depending on your level of risk, you may be advised to have one or more blood tests or receive a booster dose within 3 years after the first 2 doses. Your health care provider can give you more details.
Rabies vaccine can prevent rabies if given to a person after an exposure. After an exposure or potential exposure to rabies, the wound site should be thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. If your health care provider or local health department recommend vaccination, the vaccine should be given as soon as possible after an exposure but may be effective any time before symptoms begin. Once symptoms begin, rabies vaccine is no longer helpful in preventing rabies.
If you have not been vaccinated against rabies in the past, you need 4 doses of rabies vaccine over 2 weeks (given on days 0, 3, 7, and 14). You should also get another medication called rabies immunoglobulin on the day you receive the first dose of rabies vaccine or soon afterwards. If you have received rabies vaccination in the past, you typically need only 2 doses of rabies vaccine after an exposure.
Rabies vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines.

I seem to recall getting the rabies vaccine before our Peru trip. I wonder how long it's good for? I got them at a travel clinic and was told that there isn't a set schedule like many vaccines but are generally effective for up to 3 years after the first two shots. The only way to know for sure is to get an antibody titer test, which may be worth it since the shots are so expensive. She said that veterinary workers in high-risk environments often get tested a year or two out and then get on a regular schedule. If it's been a couple of years, you can opt to get just one shot as a booster.
