Have shoulder issue requiring surgery November 30th. Recovery time 5-6 months. For the 1st 4-6 weeks the arm/shoulder must be immobilized. Will be living in my Danish recliner! I was almost in tears, informing my seasonal employer, "I'm out for the season". I'm a seasonal shuttle driver taking skiers from Salt Lake Airport to Alta, Snowbird, Deer Valley, Park City and back again. I love driving up canyon in snowstorms at 3:00am to collect skiers and take them to the airport. I love this way cool "unretired" gig. You meet people from all over the world, sometimes even famous persons. Most of all...I love the hustle and challenge of turning Hamilitons into Jacksons. Income is very much gratuity driven. This job has been the funding source for my uptown, long-distance hiking habit. Most of all this impacts my quest for the Crown. The Crown is retirement priority number one. Biological clock ticking. Therefore, the job is sacrificed, and surgery scheduled in deference to the trail. Spring GCNP permit efforts kaput! Fortunately, hiked the SoCal portion of the PCT early last spring. The upside...I could get back on trail in late May...first week of June based on a projected 5–6-month rehab. Goal is 1,200-1300 mi to Oregon and perhaps a bit more. Question now is NOBO or SOBO? Meanwhile the world is upside down... Welcome to my Chin Up, Stiff Upper Lip, Carry On moment! Que Sera Sera! PHOTOS: Scored my Grand Canyon fix for the year a week ago. A North Rim overnighter.

Sorry to hear of the impending surgery, but glad they see you back at it in a few months. Hang in there, and do PT religiously (that means do it like you tackle the trail- daily)

I had shoulder surgery done close to 20 years ago now and have stayed pain-free since. It was worth it.

I'm sorry for the bump in the road. Your expected recovery interval is on par with what relatives have experienced, and they were all glad to have done it despite the long time off. I hope all goes well and you're back in action as soon as safely possible.

That long recovery sucks, but sounds like you’ll be back on the trail when it counts. Nice Canyon photos. I, too, have to get an annual fix—a recent addiction, but one that has me gripped securely.

Had surgery on my left shoulder in 2016 for partially torn rotator cuff, arm in a sling 5 weeks or so and months of therapy (mostly at home doing it myself). I was just swinging a bat in a softball tournament when something popped, probably ready to go after all the years of stress I put on it.
Then in 2019 at a senior softball tournament I crashed my right shoulder (throwing arm) into the ground diving for a ball in the outfield. Worse tear of the rotator cuff plus labrum damage, surgery followed by long recovery. Some of the repair didn't completely hold, I've got some clicks and it's all I can do to hit the cutoff man.
I came back in 2020 then severely dislocated and and broke my left ankle in early August at the Eastern Nationals, done for the year again. I resumed hiking that December, taking it easy until full flexion returned. Backpacking normally by March. Playing outfield by June.
Bottom line, do what you need for fullest recovery body and mind. Lots of good times still ahead.

Heal well and quickly. I'm pretty sure the discipline to do the PT won't be a problem for you.

No, but amazingly the ball short hopped into my glove and we held the batter to a single. The other outfielder was backing me up and I flipped the ball to him. Couldn't lift my right arm after that, then drove 6 hours home in my stick shift car.

rebeccad I graduated from cortisone, once a year, to twice a year to surgery. Thanks!

driftwoody After reading your post, I don't feel so down and dire. You might be interested to know, that I was once an ASA umpire, well over 100 games a season as a member of the Montgomery County, PA Umpires Association. Nothing like a Norristown, BJ Marchese Honda vs. Al Cold Cuts game! Thanks for your story!
