There’s always something. So true! I didn't need any big gear so I ended up purchasing a compass.

Which one did you get? I bought the FAIRVIEW® 40 TRAVEL PACK during the March sale. This time I bought new hiking pants and a couple of wash/drip dry t-shirts. Plus a new set of Patagonia long underwear.

Deborah, I got the Osprey Farpoint 65, with wheels. I like being able to wheel it, but also to carry it. We’ll see. It got very good reviews. I was going to get something carry-on size, but realized that if I am doing just carry-on any of my daypacks will do.

I was going to get something carry-on size, but realized that if I am doing just carry-on any of my daypacks will do. I thought about that, but my biggest day pack is 30 liter and of course just opens from the top. I like the idea of the Fairview opening more like a piece of luggage. Plus having the option to check it, if I want, since the hip belt and shoulder straps zip into a closed compartment. My full backpack was too big for my requirements, plus it had that top load limitation, so I sold it.

We sat out the sale in favor of various truck stuff. It still needs AT tires, though.

I checked my rewards or points or whatever, and apparently I haven't bought anything at REI in a few years.

If I can lay a hand on it, I have a daypack that opens flat (unzips all around). It's probably the best one to use when it's just luggage. The Osprey carry-on size pack was 35L, and my daypack is 36, so there was no size advantage. In any case, I mostly do check a bag, because I haul my trekking poles wherever I go.

Speaking of truck stuff I’ve been eyeing some from here. lunolife.com/collections/toyota-4runnerEven if just the screen window sleeves: the flyers shouldn’t be a reason to bother with a tent imho if there’s no other reason.

Yeah, that's our main contender for the next step after using backpacking sleeping pads.
So far except for adding front recovery points, I've mainly focused on road-trip comfort things. Armrest pads, neoprene center console cover, console organizers, window vent shades, bug deflector (hopefully to reduce paint chips). I'll do the sleeping platform soon, too.

I’ve found some thermorests even out that drop enough for me but they make an attractive option. And a bit (the big drawer platforms put me too close to the roof for my comfort being six two) of storage never hurts. I just ordered the window screens and privacy curtain. Then there’s Pakmule to get the outside loaf off the roof and out of the wind. Not yet but tempting. pakmule.com/The deflector is a good idea: that hood edge is a target I’ve found on my 4Runner. I was getting wear spots on my drivers seat so retroactively I got a Weathertech seat cover, they have good sunshade window sets as well.

I have a Sojourn 28 (which used to be the name for the 80L version) which looks very similar. I've had it for well over 10 years and it's still my go-to checked bag for general travel. The pack straps don't get used often but they were handy when I took my father to Japan and he was in a wheelchair, and a few trips when there was a walk-on ferry involved.

I ended up getting a pair of 0.3 cams and a set of stoppers. I am pretty well set on climbing gear, the only things I would need to buy in the future would be shoes as my kids' feet grow.

, the only things I would need to buy in the future would be shoes as my kids' feet grow. That was what we thought at one point. Then gear kept improving and getting lighter, so we upgraded… And, of course, if you backpack with the kids they need periodic new packs in larger sizes. We did, at least, shift them to adult size sleeping bags once they were out of diapers, so that could stay the same.

With that being said, I'm sure I will need to replace cams and ropes at some point. But yeah I will definitely get my kids quality backpacks at some point as they grow so I don't need to be the family pack mule all the time.
