Pretty sure the media and search and rescue teams knew they were dead already. Was it a coincidence it happened on the day they were sure to die from lack of oxygen? These kinds of stories dragged out create tons of revenue. Plus, the SARS teams get to practice. Which isn’t a bad thing.

The searchers were probably 99% sure the sub imploded, but you need to CONFIRM such things.

Through this entire, strung-out ordeal, much has been said about the time of loss of communication. But I don't recall any source explaining what those last communications consisted of. Were there signs of trouble in those last communications? Did the surface ship know if the sub was attempting to resurface?
It appears the Coast Guard was sending a lot of assets into a search of the ocean surface. That could be because the sub was designed to resurface during emergencies. But the navy informed the Coast Guard early in the process that the navy had detected sounds of an implosion or explosion around the location of the Titanic wreckage. So the sea-surface search seems to have been a "just in case" the sub had not imploded.
Whatever the case, there seems to have been plenty of media "show-boating" through the prolonged ordeal. And all the "experts" didn't seem to agree.
For the public expense of the search and rescue, the multinational effort gets a heartfelt thanks. Never mind the expense. If billionaires go to great pains to avoid paying taxes, why would they volunteer to reimburse the search parties? I guess we settle for whatever the Navy and Coast Guard will learn from the investigation and of course the heartfelt thanks from the families of men who were willing to risk their lives in a hazardous vehicle that had received a lot of criticism as unsafe for years.

And, of course, it was a private company whose ROV actually performed the search that located the debris. I’m not certain how that would work but OceanGate had requested their services so that may be reimbursable since they were called out of port not a passerby rendering spontaneous assistance.

One of the recent articles I read said they did know that the sub was making sounds of delamination and that they had jettisoned their ballast. They got to about 600 meters from the ocean floor before trying to ascend. It didn't say if they got that info from the sub's crew before comms was lost or from something like a hydrophone on the support ship.

James Cameron mentioned all that in the video I linked above. But all that is after the fact of discovering the sub's wreckage. Nothing was mentioned, to my knowledge, as the search was in process.

If the report is correct, at least the person at the controls knew they were in a bad situation. Someone had to make the report to the company that the sounds heard were most similar to the sounds of delamination. That triggered someone to choose to drop their ballast for an attempt to get back to the surface. If only one person was aware of the danger and did these things, I hope they kept it to themselves. Alternatively, if everyone was made aware of the need to surface quickly, I hope the implosion happened immediately afterwards. Being in fear for your life and the certain knowledge of impending doom is not something I'd wish on the son. The adults can suffer. The son is the only one I feel sorry for.

Not 600 meters. 200 meters, or about 656 feet. Sorry. When is the US going to get it together and go metric like the rest of the world? The Coast Guard guys were all talking in metric but some of the news articles have been in feet.

My computer teacher back in the day told our class two things would happen in the future: 1) You would be able to get on a computer and buy things that would be delivered to your house. 2) The US would go to the metric system. Number one blew my mind. Number 2 ain’t gonna happen. Imagine the cost of it? Everybody who makes anything would have to redo their machines that makes anything. Cars, bolts, beer cans, doohickies, cooking stuff…

They've been trying to change to the Metric system since it was being taught to me in the second grade, back in 1959.
ETA: I noticed my Dr telling the PA that my incision was 3.6 long. That told me their notes were in metric, as it is about 1 and 1/2 inches.

All the bolts seem to be. Containers would just need a label/marking change if you can live with non-rounded numbers. A 12 oz beer would just be a 355 ml beer. I think it is a you can pry my yardstick from my cold dead hands kind of thing.

When I buy my weed I buy it by the QP not QK that sounds so German. Plus, how would I read a map? I’d probably end up getting lost. Moving to metric would kill thousands of hikers a year.

There was a significant push towards metric when I was in school in the 70s. NYS even started putting up signs with metric distances along the Thruway. Also taught to me in elementary school: 1) The earth was entering an ice age, and we'd have to deal with cooler temperatures 2) We'd be driving flying cars 3) Robots would be performing a vast majority of our daily tasks, and a major problem would be trying to fill all your free time
