Ok, so I'm guessing that most won't watch the full 24 minutes to see his side of the story but the shortened version is that he got himself into a situation where he thought he needed rescuing. He still had food and fuel (eventually running out of fuel) and wasn't injured and about 2 miles to the closest road. The local sheriff looked at the map and more or less said hike to the trailhead. Which is more or less exactly what happened in the end. This guy is mad because the sheriff didn't treat him very well once they got to him and made fun of him on their facebook (i think) page.
If you do watch it, I would be interested in your thoughts.

Hitting SOS 2 miles from the trailhead and still able to walk?
TR rules prohibit me from saying what I actually think, but needless to say, I agree with the sheriff.

Why did he "think" he needed rescuing?.
Returning to his car had to have been his plan, why didn't he just do that? I understand from his description (I skipped around in the video) that he couldn’t immediately work out an off trail route from his lower elevation location up to the closest approach to the road; but why not just do his original plan OR backtrack to his car.
Also I didn’t catch; how many days in to his planned 7 day trip (he mentioned he was packing for that long) was he when he hit the button?
At the moment? I’d have just backtracked. As I’d have as an option in the back of my pocket for a speculated route that didn’t pan out. Honestly I’ve done that. Got very dumped on one Thanksgiving break in Kings Canyon NP. Rae Lakes Loop. We were up Bubbs Creek trail and woke up to about 18” of fresh snow>>> zero trail and some heights (Glen Pass) to come, we just turned around and picked our way back more or less following the drainage and map detail to keep sort of on track. Loops just sometimes don’t work out: it’s a risk. 2 men died doing a loop out if Hetch Hetchy one year, they’d gine clockwise so the came to Wapama Falls on their last day, a couple of flat trsil hours from the trailhead: BUT the spring melting had the falls raging over the walkway and handrails. I could sympathize, turning back would have meant days… but instead their bodies were recovered that fall.
My overall philosophy when all I had was a PLB was even were I still walking IF I had been so delayed a SAR callout was inevitable I’d trigger my beacon to prevent the mission from undergoing an unnecessary random search. Now with an Inreach communicator (66i) it’s an easier judgement; I’d just message I was delayed and why. Thus avoiding any mission at all. More time out there? #notahardship

I watched it all the way through. This is a bright shining example of the Dunning-Kruger Effect, with entitlement & narcissism added to the mix - some of the worst mass psychoses plaguing our culture. - He is greatly overestimating his abilities, knowledge, and experience. He knows a little bit about winter hiking & camping, but is unaware of how much more he has to learn. I'm sure other forum members will make an exhaustive specific list. I'm not bothered by him taking risks & asking for help...we all make mistakes & have to learn. That's what youth is for. My problem is that he's stamping his feet & even trying to lecture the authorities. You can't learn anything if you believe that you know everything already. - His biggest mistake is his dependence on the InReach technology, which he believed entitled him to instant helicopter rescue, a 5 course Michelin-star meal, and a chocolate truffle & rose petals on his satin pillow covers. I'm sure this topic has been ranted about exhaustively here. - Did the sheriff dept. actually make fun of him and "dox" him online? Does anyone have a link? He scrolls past the social media post very quickly in the YouTube video. If the sheriff used social media to educate the public using this guy's mistakes...well, then, I think that's fair game. Sorry it makes you look bad, but the greater social good is the imperative. - A skim of the comments on the YouTube video is disconcerting. Nobody is discussing outdoor skills at all - no exploration of what mistakes were made, and what to learn. Just ego massaging and garden-variety faux outrage.

“which he believed entitled him to instant helicopter rescue,”
Yeah, now that’s a big YIKES. There was a Grand Canyon incident years back where a similarly minded party essentially thought their rented device was a room service calling device, which they did, multiple times. Asking for water iirc.
And, when done professionally as I’ve seen YOSAR do, a “lessons learned” critical analysis of an incident that resulted in a callout is a terrific public education tool I fully support.

“which he believed entitled him to instant helicopter rescue,” Yeah, now that’s a big YIKES. It gets YIKES-ier - he was particularly disappointed to be refused a helicopter rescue because he specifically selected his campsite near a frozen lake because "that's a great landing spot for a helicopter"

Did the sheriff dept. actually make fun of him and "dox" him online? Does anyone have a link? Take a look at this... Idaho County Sheriff Office's report.I don't want to down play is concern (fear) of his situation but it seems to me that he wasn't really prepared for the conditions he was going into.I wouldn't have done that because I have never winter hiked nor have I done much true mountain hiking. I think having a grasp of your true abilities without being overconfident plays a huge role here. Which is more or less exactly what Sleeping Bag Man! has said.

His lying to the sherif about being out of food when he wasn’t should open him up to charges as well as fines to pay for the rescue.
“Conti replied, "Fine, but I feel like I'm walking to disaster." Conti then walked about 1/3 of a mile in the wrong direction before going back to Walton Lake and sending a message to Dispatch at about 12:45 PM stating that he had stopped to set up camp as he was out of food, out of energy and was scared. With this information, deputies left the trailhead and hiked down to Conti's location which was approximately ½ of a mile in approximately two feet of snow. Conti was found to be in good physical condition with no injuries and still had plenty of food and provisions in his backpack.”
Two feet of snow… He’d hiked five miles from his car and called for a helicopter rescue. And lied about his state to try and get one. The lying is the step way too far. They won’t but he should face charges: that wouldn’t discourage other people in need, it would discourage people from lying to the people they’re asking to risk themselves to aid them.

I'm not seeing how this Facebook post is unprofessional. It’s a factual police report - public record - that includes the citizen’s name and city of residence. “Doxxing” implies the publication of personally identifying information with intent to harm. I don’t see how this could be construed as cyber-bullying or “doxxing”. ((( rubs eyes ))) What am I missing? ETA: it appears to be SOP for this sheriff's office to post SAR reports that include names, photos, and home cities of rescuees. Example: Previous Rescue Report

His lying to the sherif about being out of food when he wasn’t should open him up to charges as well as fines to pay for the Well…I don’t think he necessarily LIED - he ran out of stove fuel, and therefore believed that his remaining freeze-dried food was inedible. Perhaps the only crime was the loss of a learning opportunity. He was in the woods, which are (pro tip) flammable. A copious supply of fuel, courtesy of Mother Nature. But if wet fuels & inexperience thwarted that effort, he would’ve eventually gotten hungry enough to tear into his Mountain House bags & chow down, sans water. A little al-dente……certainly not up to his sophisticated & elegant standards for cuisine…..but I’m pretty sure the human stomach can rehydrate the food & make use of it. I think that would dawn on even the most rank amateur, before resorting to shoe leather & tree bark.

Good lord…why am I trying to be fair? Solo winter camping without any plan, knowledge, or tools to build a fire? And then whining about the sheriffs? To quote an esteemed forum member, YIKES. Now I want to hear what Lamebeaver has to say. Can he please be granted a temporary exemption to the TR rules? Pretty please? Hehe

Maybe he should have said he was black. Then he could have waited for the Sheriff to arrest him for something...🤪

Did he post this on YouTube hoping to get corporate sponsorship for his Darwin Award?
Did he really think any sensible person would agree with his point of view?
What happened to considering whether you might be considered stupid for what you're about to post?
