Back to the OP. I have no problem with the name changes but, beside the costs to replace signage immediately, there needs to be a disclaimer on the relevant maps/GIS databases, updates to guidebooks, etc.. Probably can be done mostly electronically nowadays especially for out of print guidebooks which still have a publisher.
Outdoors users and historians of various calibers still use old books and maps for various reasons, so it should be easier for those users to be aware of the new names. Conversely if there’s serious political opposition, maybe take that sign money that won’t be used and apply it to updating databases etc.. for landmarks that did experience a name change.

One of my favorite places to go in Texas is the Davis Mountains. Good luck ever getting that changed.

I think Bette was a terrific actress. You're giving us Texans way too much credit.

I think Bette was a terrific actress. You're giving us Texans way too much credit. But that is one way out of the problem. King County, WA, basically did that. I don’t remember who the original King was that the county was named for, but someone undesirable. The county simply took a vote and declared it was named for Martin Luther King, Jr. No sign changes necessary!

So then, the mountains in Texas really can be named after Bette!

Unfortunately, the county in which the mountains are located is "Jeff Davis County", which kind of gives away who the mountains and the fort are named after. And if you've ever been to Jeff Davis county, you know that they are never going to allow a name change, not in my lifetime at least. Your story reminds me of the elementary school, Robert E Lee, that I attended as a child. Several years ago, the name was officially changed to Russell Lee Elementary, in honor of a local photographer. To my knowledge he had nothing to do with the school, but it allowed them to keep the name Lee, and did save money on sign changes.

There is a very beautiful area where I grew up, where the mountain area and Highway name referenced both a massacre and a disgusting old saying. Dead Indian highway was changed, and rightly so to Chief Joseph highway. But as far as I know there is still a Dead Indian Campground up there. My friend, Joe Horsecapture has become very hard working in Native American museums as a curator but he has a great sense of humor and back in high school posed for a picture draped limply over the “Dead Indian Campground” sign. he has just put it in as his Facebook profile picture again I’m not sure If it has changed completely but near where my Dad grew up in the Pittsburgh area when I was 12 we had a camping trip in an area where signage used both the names Black Mountain and “n——-“ Mountain. Here the massacres were horrendous and the area has many places named after families involved, but have gradually been making the change to using the old Tolowa and Yurok terms from the pre white settler days.

So then, the mountains in Texas really can be named after Bette! Or Miles! Excellent alternative! Surely the folks in Jeff Davis county wouldn't object to a Black jazz master supplanting a treasonous slave owner. But maybe I'm giving them way too much credit.

Here in Colorado, is seems from the review of this thread like we are a bit slow on some of this, but it's picking up steam. I am involved with a Wilderness alliance that has been working on changing the name of the Gore Range in Summit County (Eagles Nest Wilderness) to the Nuchu Range. My colleague has been working with the Ute tribes on this for years. Nuchu is one word, among many, the Utes use to describe themselves, "Our People." Gore was a historical monster, not an American, and never set foot in the range. Here is an article one of my colleagues recently wrote about the history of the ENW wherein he mentions the name change in context. The Nuchu proposal as been moving slowly through our state geographic naming board for a couple of years. In 2022, they took up the "S-word" change statewide. Here is an article that lists all of the name changes that are in process. We take heart that one of the changes is from "S-word Creek" to Nuchu Creek in the Soon-to-Be Nuchu Range. Fingers crossed for 2023.

The town of Kelseyville in California has resisted changing its name for many years, despite being named for a murderous psychopath.
But be careful. Next thing you know, Moms for Liberty is going to want to rename the Grand Tetons.
