There’s that old adage, hunger is the best spice. After a long trail day my food is usually very spicy. 😎

Ha, you ALL lost me at biscuits and gravy. Something I just don't understand... isn't it missing an essential item, like the roast/turkey/chicken?

In the hot weather I need salt. I always have. For some reason I seem to lose a lot through sweat. If I don't replace it I tend to get dehydrated and headaches easily.

In the desert, I have to be careful about rubbing my eyes. With sweat evaporating so instantly, my face gets coated in salt crystals and getting them into my eyes brings a minute of misery. Since it's so abrasive, I have to be careful about chafing, too.

Good biscuits and gravy will have pork sausage in it. It's just homey and filling and makes you all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Plus it's basically carbs on carbs.

I take it back about #10 cans being cheaper. Their prices, if you can find them, have gone through the roof. Far worse than at the beginning of the pandemic. I guess the Ukraine issue has a lot of people worried about stocking their bomb shelters. An example: I bought a #10 can of chicken pieces a year ago at $45 which was a bit pricey. The best I could find now was $90.
The individual meals, which don't boost the 30 year+ lifetime, are pretty much the reasonable prices still but you can't get chicken pieces in that format.

ErnieW link linkI expect even fresh chicken to get much higher with the flu thing killing off millions of poultry.

I could see it as a first night meal but otherwise the water weight seems a little high except if you have to pack all your water where you are going.

I could see it as a first night meal but otherwise the water weight seems a little high except if you have to pack all your water where you are going. It's boiled water, you can put it back in a container, of course you may lose some to steam. 4.5 oz. per person is hardly heavy for our needs. It barely is heavier than FD or dehydrated. Most bought meals of similar size for two people are around 4 oz. , so 4 oz. heavier, or about the amount of water I drink in the first few miles. Not UL, but HYOH. I looked it up and the rice pack is 8.5 oz and 350 calories for the pouch. A Mountain House Chicken Fried rice pack is 4.7 oz and 800 calories for the pouch. Reviews as usual say the MH is very salty but tasty.

My current favorite rice isn't even a legit rice. Right Rice from Betterer Food in San Franciso, AC Most packages are lentil flour, chickpea flour, pea flour, rice flour, sunflower oil, and salt. Some flavored. I take one package, repack into 2 servings, it is just under 300 calories. Top with another calories and proteins to make a meal. My favorite is dehydrated curry and vegetables. The second is red or green chili. Always some rehydrated vegetables. The Right Rice working like Minute Rice. Put in a pot or container, cover with boiling water, and let sit for 7-10 minutes. The original makes the base for a good breakfast with nut butter, fruit, and I have grown to like protein shakes poured over.

I'll say this...I have a massive flock (for most people) of chickens - they are pretty awesome. I found a side hobby in taking in flocks from those overwhelmed. Hahahaha!

I take it back about #10 cans being cheaper. I use so much, because of recipe development and such, that we bought a Harvest Right freeze dryer. Had to wait 6 months to get it. Not cheap. But since we farm, it'll be worth it. I'm a Thrive Life consultant as well. I buy my meat from them in Pantry sized cans, rather than #10 cans. I can use it up quickly, with no waste (they are far smaller), but are packaged in metal cans the same. Something to think about (and I became a consultant only because I get a percentage back monthly of my purchases, it dropped the price from 15 to 30% off retail as I buy a lot). Some of us are shameless preppers. Nothing wrong with that.....

Rice, tuna, soy sauce. good dinner. Easy to fix with Minute Rice or dehydrated at home rice. I’ll do that or a variant with salmon. I love the flavored tuna packets (mostly “Thai Chili”, “Siracha”, “Jalapeño”, etc..), but seems the similarly flavored salmon are harder to find. .. I buy Minute Rice when making backpacking meals; never touch it otherwise. ^ +1 for minute rice on a shorter trip. Sounds like I really need to get a dehydrator / freeze dryer. Minute Rice is partially dehydrated or parboiled after it’s been cooked. Some hikers even “cold soak” it. Heard it’s not 100% though. .. Yankee be gone, … ! Good biscuits and gravy will have pork sausage in it. It's just homey and filling and makes you all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Plus it's basically carbs on carbs. Reminds me, .. there’s probably a biscuits and gravy recipe out there using the magic of soy! Picked up one of those large bean n’beef frozen burritos in the middle of a backpacking trip while wishing for veggies. Then I saw the label say most of the “meat” is TVP (textured vegetable protein). How neat is that? Score ! ! ! Imagine the same can be done for “sausage”.

Like jazzmom, I'm Asian (of the Filipina variety), so I have pretty high standards for rice. As a result, I really just don't cook rice while backpacking or camping, unless I'm car camping and can bring proper cookware—except the part where I no longer have a car...
It's not just the cookware, though, it's also the fuel usage for boiling it and then simmering it for 15-20 minutes.
There's one Japanese YouTuber I follow who cooks his rice in a 5" Lodge cast iron skillet with a cast iron lid over a twig stove without burning it, and that is some mad skill.
I will admit to having my eyes on the Keith Titanium rice steamer, but I probably won't buy it.
