During our walk this morning a lady informed us that she had seen a small bird with a rose colored chest (I was playing with her dog...) We had just seen Mrs Flame Robin so we knew what she meant and found Mr Flame Robin soon after.

Only a few hundred California condors live in the wild, but about 20 teamed up to trash one woman’s deck Large groups of vultures (turkey vultures and black vultures) congregate at favorite places in our neighborhood. The make quite a mess.

Apparently they’d been casing her place for a while.
I’m guessing reliable updrafts for takeoff. They need that sort of assistance to get going. Hence really liking cliffs where they get airspeed by simply dropping over the side.

One of the more colourful birds in our area. The Spotted Pardalote. A male and a female

franco , you have the most wonderful birds down there! They are all from the area where we walk around most days. So far I have taken about half of all the birds that have been spotted here. It gets more difficult to find new ones or as in the case of those Pardalotes,to be able to take a decent photo of one. This is a Sparrowhawk that I saw yesterday when I was chasing a Little Eagle. I only see it a few times a year .Maybe I'll get closer the next time...
this was the little Eagle I was trying to get a bit closer to. They fly very high but occasionaly we see them lower when they take off or go back to a tree.

franco , you have the most wonderful birds down there! They need something to offset all their venomous creatures.

Venomous creatures get bad press. They need to be able to bite or sting you before they can kill you. Anyway , we have plenty of other animals that can kill you and are not venomous at all. don't try to pet one of these...

I just read that my new camera, Nikon mirrorless as an experiment, has a wildlife eye recognition setting where it will automatically detect and focus on birds eyes. Sorta cool.
ETA: I wonder if this would override the confusion intervening twigs generate? Because it’s amazing how often an interesting bird chooses just the right spot to totally defeat autofocus! And I really could have used that capability (though I don’t have the necessary long lens) with an adorable set of triplet black bear Cubs were doing their thing mostly buried in amongst an enormous amount of autofocus distracting shrubbery down at GSMNP.

Sony has that in their latest camera , the A1 . The sample photos I have seen seem to be promising but were not of the type you mention. They were of birds in flight. BTW, most likely that Bird Eye focus is a patent from a third party and that is why more than one manufacturer will come out with it at about the same time. The original Eye Focus (human eye) was.

Anyway , we have plenty of other animals that can kill you and are not venomous at all. Puh-leez. They just haven't found the venom gland yet.
