I don't have any pics, but the last two birds I spent time watching were a belted kingfisher when I was perched atop Inspiration Point in Southern Illinois last month, and a blue heron in Sawmill Creek at Waterfall Glen near Argonne National Laboratory a few days ago.

I hardly ever see Belted Kingfishers while Great Blue herons are my most reliable NWR sighting. And being both huge and seemingly entirely indifferent to people an almost embarrassingly easy shot. But I can’t ever resist taking photos of them. Those faces especially; so fierce!

Yesterday looking at a Brown Falcon escaping a pair f Magpies I spotted a pair of Whistling Kites in the distance. Shortly after the female ( bigger than the male) flew towards me, then came right above me for a look, circled a couple of times and then went on hunting. A few years ago, not far from the same spot, I had one flying above me for 11 minutes (time from my camera ). I have seen them there doing the mating ritual in the air. Rather amazing. (they lock talons with one flying upside down)
BTW, the image you see in the post is pretty badly compressed. Much better if you click on it to open it and then click on it again.

Black Pacific duck (dad I think) with the chicks on their way back to the swamp. About 20 m away from where I met a Tiger snake. (they also cross there to go down to the water)

BCPete,
Love the mountain bluebird pic! One of my favorite along with western bluebird and Lazuli bunting...
Happy Trails,
DR

downriver , that last bird has been on my most wanted list for some 45 years. Unfortunately they very rarely make it down to Texas. Great photo.
