High Sierra Fan , what I’m noticing is that your iPhone 14 makes a much clearer zoomed photo than my 11. It does seem to produce nice images, though at the cost they’re huge: 50mb plus and a bunch today were over 100mb. And this one is a worst case actually. I chose the 3x lens then pinch zoomed it to 15X which as a digital zoom, basically a crop, it’s often been in previous iPhones very pixelated. Otoh its night shots have become magical. It will automatically take multiple images over a short time span and align them while doing post production to generate a really detailed image. okay, notabird…

Well, it looks like a time lapse photo of a dove landing.

Well, it looks like a time lapse photo of a dove landing. It may be meant to evoke a dove. Isn’t that part of the 911 memorial?

Well, it looks like a time lapse photo of a dove landing. It may be meant to evoke a dove. Isn’t that part of the 911 memorial? Yes it’s The Oculus in Manhattan at the World Trade Center. I’ve not read the architects intentions but that sounds like a plausible possibility. ETA: BigLoad Wow that was spot on! “The Oculus was positioned as part of the World Trade Center masterplan by Daniel Libeskind and designed by Santiago Calatrava. The structure’s white metal-clad steel ribs reach up and out in a monumental move symbolic of a hand releasing a dove. The structure's orientation serves as a lasting reminder of the attacks of September 11, 2001. It is in alignment with the sun’s solar angles on each September 11, from 8:46 am, when the first plane struck, until 10:28 am, when the second tower collapsed. Its central skylight fits this alignment and washes the Oculus floor with a beam of light.” that skylight over the main hall shop area connecting the 12 subway line access: www.officialworldtradecenter.com/en/local/learn-about-wtc/oculus-transportation-hub.html

That's pretty cool. I was within a few blocks in early November and also in August, but I usually avoid getting any closer. I haven't seen it since it was a big hole in the ground.

That's pretty cool. I was within a few blocks in early November and also in August, but I usually avoid getting any closer. I haven't seen it since it was a big hole in the ground. Yes, I never go anywhere near The Memorial space (my godson is FDNY thankfully he was on light duty that day, sort of ironic as his mom had been terrified for him when he transferred from NYPD to FD; logical in its way as that meant moving over to a job where you daily run into fires as a basic part of the job description), the Oculus is a nice underground pedestrian connection from the Hudson River Greenway through to the Fulton street subway station that connects with a lot of lines I find useful. That night I’d walked from the Pier 11 ferry terminal (I was coming from Brooklyn) through the Financial district to the Oculus and then out into the Hudson River park at the Brookfield Winter Garden to walk north a bit. I don’t walk interior Lower Manhattan much so I had some nice discoveries. Also notabird The Oculus from the back of the Winter Garden the Winter Garden (palm trees!) ETA: All iPhone 14 pro max shots. I’ve not yet loaded the ones from my Nikon Z7 II over to my laptop. Where I’m sure some of the ones shot with a 70-200mm f 2.8 lens will be far beyond what the phone could do. But the night shots? I’ve my doubts. The iPhone does a LOT of in device processing.

For those who care, I shot that with an iPhone 11 Pro using the zoom lens. That's an incredible photo. It still just blows my mind that phones can take photos of such quality.

OTOH this is from the same bird with a 50mm dSLR that I've cropped in on: in the original the feather detail is far better here. Not sure what bird is tho.
The uncropped shot: That said trinity that image systems tiny enough to fit in a small corner of a thin smartphone are producing the images they are today? Remarkable.

Indeed. Not sure what bird is tho. I'd say it's a Red-tailed Hawk, based on the stocky build, dark head, and the streaked belly band.

trinity Thanks, that agrees with what my Merlin app was suggesting, I’m just used to the darker western versions that are daily sightings on the freeway light standards. This one was funny, when I first spotted it it was on the ground messing about in some leaves.

Yes, as you are clearly aware, Red-tails are highly variable in their coloration. This one was funny, when I first spotted it it was on the ground messing about in some leaves. Its location in a woodland setting threw me as well, since Red-tails are more commonly open country birds. This habitat looks more like what I might expect for a Red-shouldered Hawk.

Yes, as you are clearly aware, Red-tails are highly variable in their coloration. Yes, to a very frustrating degree. For every one I'm sure of, I see a dozen that I'm not.

trinity a winter woodland does offer more open sight lines and when it flew off it did next perch in a branch of a more isolated tree next to a meadow.

Sometimes I get a reminder of why my bigger gear has worth for carrying around: yesterday at Bombay Hook NWR Hindered a bit as recently on my laptop I can't reach my high quality Photo files but rather have to export a JPEG. Before After a crop of above. A male Belted Kingfisher
