I would not like to meet a Cassowary in the wild. Why? do they anger issues? What GaliWalker said. Emus can also be agressive if they feel you are thretening their young but I am reasonably accustomed to them so I can "read" them but I have only seen the cassowary in parks so I don't really know their behaviour except that I know not to get close to them... We don't have them in the wild down here, they are found up north.

I was careful to keep trees in between myself and the cassowary when taking these photos. When it moved out more into the open I put the camera away and got out of there.

Can someone give me a little help here? I was up in the Desolation Wilderness this weekend doing trail work, when I noticed this large bird fly up to perch in a tree. Yeah--I know the photo is miserable. It's phone shot and the bird was far away. But this bird was as large as a crow, (notably larger than a flicker, for example) and it certainly not a raptor. The body was a dark brown/purple/grey, with a tiny bit of a lighter color around the neck, and a light colored area around the beak. My current beset guess is a band-tailed pigeon???

Sorry, I can't tell from your photo. It looks like a dove or pigeon, based on the shape of the head, but really...I can't tell.

One more of a male Superb Fairy-Wren. He has at least our felales and two non breeding males in his clan. The dominant male don't lose the colurs, the others only put on that in the breeding season. I see this male several times a week, they are territorial.

Somebody is feeding birds on Signal Mountain in GTNP. This one about made me have an involuntary bowel movement when it jumped up on the rail less than 2 feet behind me.

My current beset guess is a band-tailed pigeon??? Hard to tell from this photo, but I am highly confident that you are correct. The size, shape, what coloration is visible, and range pretty much rule out anything else.

The Hobby. They hunt from the top of the tallest tree around , swooping on smaller birds. Today it was resting low down.

Some birds look bigger than they are (the Hobby above is the size of a pigeon) others look smaller. The Crested Tern looks very similar to a Silver Gull but the wingspan at about 50" is a foot longer.
