Pro tip? When your digital camera displays an “E” where the cards remaining shots are usually displayed?
Stop shooting and check the card slot
I haven’t done that since my roll film days. I’d gotten distracted when my photos program kept erroring whenever I had finished importing my new photos and ejected the card from the reader. Updated my IS etc. etc. to no avail. Finally get an answer to a post in Apple Support Forums. Turns out there’s a provision for independent libraries managed separately from the main Photos library (makes sense if you run other big photo programs like Lightroom etc. and just use Apple Photos for social contact via iCloud).
And, as happens, that preferences setting had been deselected so when importing Photos kept a link to the original in the card. Sigh. I lost some really nice hovering Osprey photos to that as I’d reformatted the card before discovering the error. It keep returning to a small section of shoreline in the Chesapeake I was lunching at to hunt the wind shadowed water. So a lot of opportunities. Their wings are amazing.

I was admiring the colors of this Glossy Ibis at Bombay Hook NWR when I noticed it has sustained a horrific injury: one of its legs had been torn off leaving the bone exposed. Yet it’s feathers look great so it’s seemingly healthy enough to maintain its grooming

High Sierra Fan, my sympathies to you fo the error—I hav lost photos here and there over the years to technical issues or, more often, user error. And my sympathy to that poor bird!

rebeccad Thanks. Fortunately I caught the issue before deleting the 1,500 images from my 7600 mile swing out west! Now that would have been annoying to say the least. All that I lost totally was a small set from a local visit to a maritime museum and telephoto shots of a replica sailing vessel, the Maryland Dove returning to her homeport. And the latter I realized in time to grab some phone shots that aren’t half bad. The bird is a very sad case: nature being itself I suppose.

I was the first and only one to see a male Flame Robin in my walking area a few months ago but that was the only sighting of one. Several females have been about. The other day I spotted one again in the same area and on the third day I was able to get a bit closer , just enough to get a decent shot (cropped...) yesterday I found a new bird for us, a White Winged Triller :

My pet swans have a cygnet. There were over 100 swans about when I spotted this pair with one signet. Very unusual because they lay up to 10 eggs and most often 5-6 will survive. As I was taking a closer look I noticed that the female looked at me , I moved closer and so did the pair. That is when I knew they were my "pet" swans because all the others move further away.

I keep forgetting about this thread, but it's fun to stumble back here from time to time. Here's one taken from the kayak a couple of weeks ago. American Coots are pretty cool. If you click on the photo, I believe you'll be able to view it full size.

Birds at home. At the back of the house the neighbour has a large backyard with several trees including a very tall Norfolk Pine. On that for the last few months we have had a pair of White Faced Herons. We cannot see the nest so maybe they just come for a look around. One lands on our roof at times, it was there a few minutes ago. A regular at the birdbath is a female Blackbird. She visits several times a day. At the front we have a pair of New Holland Honeyeaters. Their nest is just over the fence so we see them come and go all the time. They use our peach tree and clothesline as a stop over before they get to the nest.
