We've all joked about ideological Darwinism at play here but now that it is happening it is scary. The recent story about an unvaccinated pregnant mom who had to have a C section then dies of COVID without seeing her new newborn followed by the unvaccinated father dying of COVID leaving behind the newborn and four more children under the age of 7 breaks my heart.
And there are a lot of similar stories unfortunately.

Talked to a co-worker today who lives in western Massachusetts, who is sick with a breakthrough case of Covid. He's over 65 and ironically had an appointment *today* for a Pfizer booster shot but started having symptoms last week after a weekend visit with school-aged grandchildren, who apparently brought it home from school. Both he and his wife are sick with bad cold/flu like symptoms (they've been tested to confirm); he said he spent two days in bed but feels he's over the worst of it. He was in a meeting today and sounded pretty miserable.
I'm not all that worried about ending up in the hospital (or worse) but talking to him today reminded me that I have no interest in getting even that sick. I'm going back to being careful about social distancing, especially around young kids and, I guess, parents of young kids...

Getting on a plane this week for the first time in a year and a half. (I used to do this 3x/mo.) Heading for NYC for work and bringing my daughter to look at Columbia PT school, where she's been accepted for next year. Armed with two shots of Pfizer, flu shot, N95s, and my vaccination card. We are going to an event where proof of vax will be checked, and there will be rapid testing. Wow. It's all still so surreal.

Though Southwest had had an epically bad week, all of our flights took off on time, arrived early, and the staff were cheery and helpful. Masking and other safety precautions were fine. NYC is masked up and enforcing vax proof, etc., pretty well wherever I was. Columbia medical campus is somewhere my daughter can see herself pursing her dream of physical therapy in the arts/dance, and my client meetings were fantastic. All in all, a worthwhile trip.

I was planning to fly to see my son and his family for Thanksgiving. All of the flight cancellations changed my plans, I'll be driving.
As a whole this summer / fall was good for me...just tired of all the fall out. Supply chain issues, arguments about masks and vaccines, along with so much hatefulness from so many. I'm so very tired of it.

I think if there's one aspect of life that people may, or already do hope ends with this year is the hostility that's developed between people, elected officials, their constituents, school employees, retail employees and their bosses, and especially hospital employees and the medical pros.

Got my Moderna booster this morning!
Everybody's still pretty masked up around here (Ann Arbor) and a lot of the venues like jazz clubs, concerts, etc., have either a proof of vaccine or everybody masked policy. But I'm going to a Rolling Stones concert next week in Detroit (indoors) and I'm expecting very few masks. It will probably feel a little traumatic.

Around here, masking varies from day to day. Of course, the governor of this great state decided to give everyone an out by voiding any "mask mandates" by anyone, so no one has to wear a mask - and a lot of them don't. OTOH, I do. I never stopped doing it. I'm 70+ years old, and that puts me, based on the stats I see, in the highest risk group. Not that anyone else cares. If people get too close to me, I tell them to back off.
Back in June & July, when I was dealing with the "kidney stone thing", I got into an argument with a clerk at the clinic where I was getting some imaging done: I started it, so it was my fault. I told her that we'd probably never get out of the pandemic because the Republicans wanted us to stay there for political reasons. She countered that it was the Democrats who wanted that, but I told her that was a stupid thing to say: if everyone would simply take proper precautions in public, the virus would find it harder to reproduce. The Republicans don't want that (for some stupid reason).
I have an analogy I tell anyone who protests: would you drive your car using only the accelerator and brakes? I mean, never ever use the rearview mirror, pay attention to speed limits, warning signs or stop lights and never ever signal your intentions or pay any attention to what other drivers are doing. Same thing. Using a mask, getting vaccinated and keeping a reasonable distance away from strangers, especially indoors, just makes common sense.

My wife and I are in Fargo, ND tonight on our drive to Minnesota. Masking is mandatory indoors in BC, Alberta, and Saskatchewan ... with restaurants checking vaccine passports very rigorously (Applebees in Regina, SK was anyway).
We just went for a quick bite to eat at the food court in the mall down the street here in Fargo, and I think masking was maybe 5% - with maybe 20% for workers in the food court. Talk about a culture shock. I just checked the fully vaccinated rate for ND and it's only 48.2%!?! In BC, the fully vaccinated rate for 12+ is 79.5%.
Anyway, my wife is excited to see her 85 year old parents tomorrow ... it's just under two years since we've seen them last. Definitely going to be avoiding heavy traffic public spaces from now on.

We're in Europe for a few days visiting our daughter. Amazing protocols between passports, vax records, negative tests, etc. Each country has its own requirements. Phew!
But the immigration officer in Geneva said our preparation and certificates were: "superb."
We got in.

Snow leopards die of Covid-19 complications at Nebraska zooHow SARS-CoV-2 in American deer could alter the course of the global pandemicHas anyone commented on 1) the 3 snow leopards that died in Nebraska from complications of covid infection or 2) the presence of covid in deer - both stories I've seen about lately? At this point, no one seems all that concerned about this, but it seems that, if humans can transmit (and apparently have already transmitted) covid to wild animals, we might have a problem somewhere down the road. Not that I know. AFA the thread topic is concerned, no, this isn't something that's actually affecting me right now, but I was wondering about it, and didn't feel like it justified a whole new thread.

Currently in Austria, where they will shut the entire country down for 20-20 days on Monday. Only essential workers may leave the house. No exceptions.
Flying home Wednesday from Germany, which is still open...fingers crossed.
Makes mask mandates seem like small potatoes.

COVID was reported to be detected in deer in NJ at least a year ago. I don't know if it has had much impact, especially compared to their most feared predator: cars.
