My husband got his results from testing Thursday. They were negative but the first two inmates and four coworkers were positive. My test was Saturday and no results yet. I’m aware that I kept saying, “this soup isn’t as spicy as I remember” or “I thought this was better last time I made it” but my sense of smell and taste are already impacted by Parkinson’s so not sure on that symptom.
I feel better overall, breathing better, no fever, diarrhea and stomach and head all better, but I can’t sleep, flat without a much worse cough jerking me awake. Not coughing at all in upright position.

Current map of COVID-19 infection rates over the recent 14 days. My county is a light purple mauve as are most of our 11 SF Bay Area counties. Mask wearing is generally well followed. There is however a great variation of rates here in California and even within specific counties that shows significant differences among ethnic groups and urban versus rural farm versus rural non-farm.

Good news (though keep your precautions going) - Pfizer announced its experimental vaccine is 90% effective (for comparison the flu vaccine is 50%). The exact properties need to be worked out but this seems to have an upcoming solution... www.cnn.com/2020/11/09/health/pfizer-covid-19-vaccine-effective/index.htmlAlso other companies still have to announce their vaccine results. It’ll likely get approved by late December according to the news and, according to a recent FDA Chief Dr Gottlieb/also medical correspondents, .. first be distributed to nursing homes, medical employees dealing with potential COVID patients etc.. The medical correspondents (all MDs) are pretty sure it’ll require an annual shot like the flu, and some questions remain like if it will help people with an actual bad case of COVID (function like a treatment). Hoping this thing gets licked by summer (fingers crossed)

I was talking with a friend, who's an Infectious Diseases specialist, yesterday. He gave me advance notice, by one day (!), about promising results from an upcoming Pfizer vaccine. (I wish I'd known about this news then; I could have quizzed him about it.) Anyway, he mentioned two things about it: - As we all know, while people who've recovered from COVID-19 do get antibodies, these don't last that long. This is probably what will also hamper the vaccine's effectiveness. - Distribution is going to be an issue, particularly because the vaccine needs to be stored at -70°F. (If I'd known about today's news, I would have asked him if he was talking generally, or specifically about the Pfizer vaccine.) Finally, here's an article of attempts to develop vaccines for the Spanish Flu; yes, there were many such attempts: www.historyofvaccines.org/content/blog/vaccine-development-spanish-flu

Many of us might help research programs on the disease. The following website has a long list of research programs with many studies desperate for volunteers. I've volunteered for the new Stanford University CATCH study that is local to our region, that sends out home nasal swab PCR test kits periodically and requires periodic online health status info. In July was tested as negative via my Medicare provider Kaiser Permanente and can obtain further tests by request, however the above will have me being tested more than I would likely request that is useful to me and also benefits the research.

I just submitted the paperwork to sell five weeks of vacation.
(Since there's no practical way to use it before it goes away.)

It's not quite as bad as it sounds, since that's what was still left over from 2019. I'll still carry over that much from 2020 into 2021. I'm really looking forward to next, though, because I've only taken off four days so far this year.

I'm really looking forward to next, though, because I've only taken off four days so far this year. You win. I think I've taken off about two. I've got a lot of vacation sitting there, doing nothing. Scotland - cancelled Louisiana I - cancelled OBX - cancelled Louisiana II - cancelled Thanksgiving - cancelled Christmas - canceled It seems that one answer fits all these days. For a while I wasn't allowed to travel more than 100 miles from my home w/o permission. They like to know where I am, but that was a bit over the top.

Australian airline Quantas announced passengers will need a COVID vaccine to fly once the vaccine becomes available and according to its CEO, other airlines will likely follow suit. www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-55048438Not sure if this would be a requirement for boat or trail travel. Of course regular Greyhound riders probably have robust enough immune systems by now ...

You win. I think I've taken off about two. I'm taking all of my vacation even if I'm just at home. I need the mental break from work. Besides that the vacation policy is use it or lose it. So, I make sure I use every hour!

- As we all know, while people who've recovered from COVID-19 do get antibodies, these don't last that long. This is probably what will also hamper the vaccine's effectiveness. That is the one item I have not heard much about. And the reality is they do not know how long the vaccine will be effective since so little time has passed. I'm anticipating at least another year of this mess.
