I got the Moderna booster shot about 10 days ago but find myself pessimistic that even a broad area of the country will reach herd immunity. I disagree. At least 230,732,565 people or 70% of the population have received at least one dose. Overall, 196,398,948 people or 60% of the population have been fully vaccinated. usafacts.org/visualizations/covid-vaccine-tracker-states/As far as the un-vaccinated, from here on out, whatever happens to them, they earned. We will achieve herd-immunity one way or another.

That is better than I realized. I guess I'll have to wait and see. My concern lately is that with the efficacy of the vaccines evidently declining, many of those doses are not as potent as earlier. And ultimately a decline in new cases needs to be sustained. But perhaps I'm too cynical. Let's hope you are right.

Who cares. This is about the USA. None of us live in Europe.

We're just back from ten days in Europe, including a few with our daughter in Geneva. Four COVID registrations, two COVID tests, and of course and passports and vaccination cards to get from one country to the next. And we only had one day of total lock down. I guess that counts as a success. What a world.

That's the type of provincial response I expected. Oh, you're so sophisticated! The conversation was about how Coronavirus has affected US in the USA, and our vac rates, not Europeans. I fully expected someone to bring up Europe's irrelevant jab rates, and you didn't disappoint. I've lost track how many times I've been to Europe, so I'm happy to be thought of as provincial by some condescending dip...

Back to the actual conversation, my favorite aunt is still dead from C19. 13 months after contracting Covid, I still don't have "normal" taste/smell back. The best way to describe it is it's "altered." My wife got her booster a couple weeks ago, and I'm looking forward to mine. Due to Covid, I haven't seen my nearly 93 yo father since August of 2018. He's recently back in NYC for the winter from being at his house in Maine since the pandemic began, but he's still not open to visitors despite having his booster. There's no point arguing, but I'm not especially happy about his overly cautious approach.
That's how Coronavirus - Covid-19: how has it changed my life so far...

Your post was totally unnecessary. If you’ve had covid and are still suffering from the consequences, I get that you’re not happy.
The fact is, until every one of us realizes this isn’t about just one of us or about just one nation, but about every person on planet earth, the better off we’re going to be. The lesson we should have all learned from covid is that your health is my health and vica versa – – that’s why universal healthcare for everyone should be something we could all agree on, as much as many would like to think it’s not so.

Your post was totally unnecessary. If you’ve had covid and are still suffering from the consequences, I get that you’re not happy. Perhaps, but the conversation was about USA vaccinations. Travis thought it was far lower, I pointed out it was higher. Reuben in his typical style took it another direction not germane to the discussion. And I'm perfectly happy, apart from those who fawn over Europe...

However, in reflection I AM being unnecessarily harsh.
I'll leave my comments as written because I think it's chickenchit to erase them, but I do apologize to Reuben and the board.

I live in Ann Arbor (Michigan) which has good vaccination rates -- for those 16+ years old, over 70% fully vaccinated and most of the city in the 90-100% range for at least one dose. That said, my hospital admin friend told me last night that the two local hospitals are back to the early pandemic capacities, one is at 100% ICU capacity and both are about to stop elective surgeries/procedures again. She said 90% of Covid hospitalizations at her hospital are unvaccinated patients and that many of the 10% vaccinated "break-though" patients have complicating factors, like being immunocompromised to begin with. We have a mutual friend who has lymphoma and hasn't responded to any of the vaccines (three full doses so far...) I haven't seen him since the beginning of the pandemic.
In contrast, another friend who lives 25 miles away told me that she, her husband and her three school-aged kids have all had Covid and, in fact, she thinks her kids have had it twice because it keeps going through the school. Though the school system in that town has covid policies that require reporting and quarantines, she says no one pays any attention to it. Her son is the high school's starting quarterback, so the school really didn't want to hear anything about Covid when he got sick. They decided that it was a cold.
My impression is that a large part of the transmissions today, including a lot of the mild break-through infections, are through young school kids who are still mostly unvaccinated. When I went to get my booster, I saw a lot of parents bringing in their young kids to be vaccinated. I'm guessing "herd immunity" will depend on more parents getting their kids vaccinated.
Yesterday, for Thanksgiving, I attended the largest home gathering since the start of the pandemic. I'm pretty sure I wasn't the only one. I suspect we'll see a bump in transmissions during the holiday season as families with unvaccinated kids travel to gather with family.

My impression is that a large part of the transmissions today, including a lot of the mild break-through infections, are through young school kids who are still mostly unvaccinated. That seems to be the case in NJ, where the Governor reported 22k cases among school children since the start of the academic year. It will be hard to address, because at least locally, parents of school-age children are the most vocal opponents of vaccination, masking, and distancing.
