Returning to the question... we are on our 3rd BA Copper Spur, thanks to wearing one out the old-fashioned way, and letting the mice get at the second. The third we were able to tape back together after the kea attacked it. Ideally we would get something larger and more durable for car-camping, but the reality is that we usually need to conserve space, and combine car-camps with backpacking so would have to haul both (or we are flying, and REALLY need to conserve space).

What's a kea? Do I need to protect myself and tent from one?

I use the Tarptent Notch for solo and an early Tarptent Rainbow otherwise. I thought the Saddle 2 might replace the latter, but it was gone too soon. I wonder if something similar will come along soon.

What's kea? Do I need to protect myself and tent from one? What she said. Kea are the world’s only alpine parrots, and possibly the smartest birds in the world. We camped at Arthur’s Pass (South Island, NZ), where signs warned us that there were highly destructive parrots hanging around and you couldn’t leave tents unattended. Turns out that sitting in the car six feet away constitutes “unattended.” Damn bird was trying to steal our EE quilts! ETA: hikerjer, for photos of some of the damage, see page 3 of this thread: bpbasecamp.freeforums.net/thread/12208/gaffers-tape-duct?page=3

Thanks rebecca. Guess l'd never heard of them. Sounds like some of the ravens we have around here. Too damn smart for their own good or mine, for that matter.

The Saddle 2 was pretty much a two person version of the Notch. I don't think the demand for it was there. Anyway, talking about the Notch, that is my solo tent now, but I have used the StratoSpire 2 also as a solo tent for some trips wher we stayed in one spot for more than a day.

This thread prompted me to look into possible replacements for my worn TT Rainbow, and price is important. SMD has a sale right now, and I find the Skyscape Trekker (28oz) very appealing at $180. Also the Lunar Solo (26oz) at $184.

I had a Trekker and replaced it with the Lunar Solo. My gripe with the Trekker was the low angle of the roof, which meant it always touched my feet and heavy condensation would drip off on top of me. The Lunar Solo has more angle to the sides so condensation doesn't drip and a little more room for the feet. The Rainbow is better than both at keeping rain out and the arc of the pole keeps you from touching the fabric so much, but it doesn't ventilate as well as the SMD tents (the Double Rainbow with two doors has great ventilation).

toejam, SMD says the Trekker has been updated to address the foot problem with a guyout, but thanks for the heads-up. My hiking buddy and I are both considering placing an order for these tents. At first I was set on the Trekker, but I have been leaning more towards the Solo. I'm taller (6-1) while my shorter buddy (5-9) who is a condensation machine might be better served by the Trekker with its near 360* ventilation when fully opened.

Holey holes, Batman! Bet you were a bit irate? Peeved, yes. But also a) aware we’d been warned, and b) totally in love with the beautiful and intelligent birds. Though I do wonder what it thought it was going to do with a down quilt (I’m guessing that bird and all it’s friends would have had a lovely warm and soft nest all winter). I’m very pleased with how the Tenacious Tape is holding up.

toejam, would you recommend purchasing a footprint for those SMD tents and if so, the Tyvek or the Polycro?

toejam, would you recommend purchasing a footprint for those SMD tents and if so, the Tyvek or the Polycro? I don't use a footprint. Whatever works for your other tents should be fine.
