Having established that there isn't a perfect tent, what tent are you using more than the others? My go-to tent for the last 5 years is the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. So light and packable. Easy to set up and roomy. I have a Tarptent Rainbow 1 that gets a lot of use on trail work trips when I carry tools in my hands and not trekking poles.

I have a BA Copper Spur 2 UL HV which is really a very nice tent. However, I find myself using my old REI Quarter Dome S1 solo most often. I don’t know why. Trust, guess. It’s just never let me down after a lot of use. Did have to replace a frayed pole once. No big deal.

I have what was then a Tarptent Squall 2, but is now the MOTrail. It is the best warm weather tent for me.
I have a BA Copper Spur 3 for fall trips when I want a bit more protection. Tons of room for 2,
I just started hanging with a Hennessy Expedition. I hope to avoid sleeping on the ground from here on out.

I have navigated my tent and shelter around three needs. I need a Rockies basin and range 3 season ulta light 1 1/2 to 2 person tent. I need a storm worthy four season tent. I need an uber-light-just-go shelter for day and half trips that really do not need a full tent. My three season tent is being replaced this spring for one less complicated in set-up, semi free standing like a Tarp Tent Bowfin. The BA Fly Creek is aging out. - Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 2 (2010)
- Black Diamond First Light with clip-in vestibule.
- OR Highland Bivy and MSR E-tarp (1 person)
2019 saw the end of life for a SD Origami UL 2 tipi tarp with floor and a Golite Trig ll tarp tent. I have an MSR Fury 2 person 4 season tent but is stupid heavy and has a bad pole system. Can't give it away.

I have a Lightheart Duo for a summer bug house, An extremely well used Fly Creek ul2 for shelter and platform set-up and occasional winter tarp-like use with the fly and footprint and our double bivy. I just received and have one night on a BA Scout 2 platinum that weighs, drum roll please, 1 pound. Very roomy, set up was ridiculously easy, we can deal with the thin fabric, we are good to our gear- we have over 300 nights on the Fly Creek. Continuation of the lighten up/getting old theme. A 5 day trip into the Grand Canyon now will see us carrying 20 and 15 fully loaded at the rim. We also have a palatial BA car camping tent that I use as a fishing base camp on the New England coast. We formerly used a Sierra Design Stretch Dome that is a bomb, and I mean bomb, proof winter pulk sled tent, as our car camping tent. Got sick of crawling in and out at all hours and weather. Much easier to put rain gear and waders on in a stand-up vestibule. No one tent to rule them all for us.

Winter: Bibler I-Tent: heavy, but I have it. Rest of the time: Tarptent Notch.
Above are for solo hiking. For car camping there are several to choose from.

Tarptent Cloudburst - tent of choice for 7' boyfriends. Lightheart Solo Tarptent Sublite (no longer in production)
I kept the GoLite Shangri-La 3 even though I am no longer SAR. It was my solo winter SAR tent, advertised as a 3 person. 2.5 lbs and floorless, perfect for a snow palace.
In the past I have had Sierra Designs tents. Some of them were better, some not so great, none as light as the Lightheart.

Bug season: Big Agnes Copper Spur UL 1
High country summer/fall out of op bug season: a Mountain Laurel Designs Dyneema Solomid (I’ve got the innernet but if I’m going to hide from the bugs it means I’m spending more time inside and the larger volume of the Copper Spur is appreciated)
Winter/on snow: a Chouinard single pole MegaMid: big volume for those long winter nights, floor less for that great on snow flexibility. When I need a replacement I’m leaning to a bigger Mountain Laurel Designs mid
Generic Car campground: REI Base Camp 6 or a BA Copper Spur HV 3 Expedition for shorter stays, better weather where I’m not expecting to have to spend much time “inside”.
Desert Car Campground: MSR Rendezvous Sun Shield 200 Wing and a Byer military cot.
Driving more places rather than flying has opened up some shelter flexibility as I avoid the airline baggage choke point.
Other than my mids I’m not terribly wedded to any single shelter for other purposes. Though I’ve more recently been choosing Big Agnes over previous Sierra Designs and The North Face options. On the trail, like for food, I’ve drifted back to simplicity: meaning the mids when suitable. Couple stakes, the pole(s)>> done.

Thinking about it were I to identify a “one size fits all” I’m not sure my MegaMid or similar mid in Dyneema wouldn’t get selected: from beach camping at Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys to Nordic ski camping along the Glacier Point road through high up the Lyell Fork of the Merced in bug season (with the addition of an A16 BugBivvy) my MegaMids have served me well.
Maybe why Black Diamond still offers them since the 80’s when I got mine... while the elaborately engineered shelters mostly come and go.
On that topic: what else is still around? MSR still offers what is for all intents the Moss Wing tarps. What else?

BA Flycreek Platinum 2 for most trips. Also have an Akto but now use it only for windy Channel Islands trips. The GG tarp has not been used in years, not much fun in a driving wind or rain storm and when is it not windy in the mountains of California?

My current tent and favorite solo backpacking tent in all four seasons is a Hilleberg Keron 3 coming in at 8 lbs 10ozs. Pic taken last week on an 18 day trip in the TN mountains.

Tarptent Scarp 1, all seasons. Been very happy with this one, and its handled some big storms very well.

Skyscape Trekker (the original single door version). Great as long as the single wall is guyed out to prevent foot of sleeping bag contacting it.

Tarptent Scarp 1, all seasons. Been very happy with this one, and its handled some big storms very well. I agree. If I have to carry it, I mostly take the Scarp 1. I haven't been getting out much in the last couple of years, but I still like that Scarp. For just about any other use where carry weight isn't a factor, I've been mostly using my old SD Zolo 1. I have 2 of them I bought on clearance a few years ago for real cheap, so I don't worry about breakage and such with it. It's a nice large (90") solo, and it's pretty rugged. I recently bought an SMD Deschutes Plus ( still on for $148), and I'm going to try to move back to "light" again.
