Typically... tarp 3-season EMS tent when weather is unknown (i.e. - monsoon season in CO) or known to be rainy/windy 4-season Eureka tent when necessary

Great thread. I have 4 primary shelters, and have just added one more. If I need an actual tent, I take my ZPacks Duplex. I consider it the perfect all-around tent. If I had to get rid of all my shelters but one, this is the one I'd keep, simply because it works in such a wide range of conditions. However, I haven't used it in several years, since conditions have allowed me to take what I have considered to be better, more specialized options. If I am not expecting bugs, I will take my 8x10 Simply Light Designs silpoly flat tarp. It is a fantastic shelter, very versatile and lightweight, but with a fairly large footprint. Recently I have made good use of a SMD Gatewood Cape. Extremely lightweight, and allows me to leave my rain shell at home. I bring it for cold weather trips when I am not expecting much precipitation. It is a bit cramped, but not uncomfortable for a short guy like me. The other shelter I take, conditions permitting, is a hammock. I have a Dutchware Gear Chameleon, which is very comfortable. This is the heaviest of my options, but sometimes the extra weight is worth it. And my latest purchase: a MLD Duomid in silnylon. I am getting out more and more in the winter, and felt it was time for a more winter-worthy shelter. I am hoping to use it this coming January.

Currently it's an REI Quarter Dome Before that it was a Black Diamond single wall. Overkill for what I need. I used a North Face Tadpole for over a decade. It was a great tent. But, one night I stayed in what was a cowboy camp. Every flat place had dried horse crap on it. I've never gotten rid of that smell. I still have the tent, though.

On another note, kinda OT. My perfect tent is not using one. A ground cloth under open sky.

SMD Lunar Solo for me. If I'm hanging I'm in a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter. I'm sure we all go through tent phases. I like the phase I'm in. In very hot weather the hammock works great and I stay cool. A 50 degree top quilt and 50 degree underquilt (both self made from black diamond down throws) are great. Spring and fall it is the SMD. If a long trip, my SMD set up is lightest so that is my go to when I have more miles for more days.

Tarptent Scarp 1, all seasons. Been very happy with this one, and its handled some big storms very well. At 3-1/2 lbs for a 1.5-person tarptent, it better be fairly bombproof! I only use a tent when hanging in my Warbonnet Blackbird is impractical. I have a first gen TT Rainbow which needs replacing (getting very worn), and a SMD Lunar Duo which I like very much. It's a palace for two, but not a bad choice for solo compared to dropping >$300 for a 1P I'll rarely use.

I have a first gen TT Rainbow Anyone know what generation my 2009 vintage Rainbow is? It has the door that opens the right way, the too-tight pole sleeve, and the unslung top spreader bar.

I think that the first notable re-design was in the 2010 version, so it sounds to me that you have the 2005 version or maybe one in between that had a ladder lock at the pole inserts. ( the very first version had a fixed length for the ribbon with the grommet there, I made an small extension for mine) That very first version had no guyout points on the sleeve either. photo from the original TT backyard... this is the 2010 version and this is the current version

Thanks, franco . Mine has unadjustable ribbon/grommets but does have a couple of guyout points on the sleeve. I hadn't noticed that TT switched the door back to open the "right" way in the latest version.

Thanks, franco . Mine has unadjustable ribbon/grommets but does have a couple of guyout points on the sleeve. I have the same, albeit in a DR. Not sure of the vintage or version, but it has the shorter bar across the top, unlike the version that came out last year.

The Rainbows have had probably the most tweeks of any of the TT shelters but since Henry has direct access to the factory it's rather convinient to be able to implement changes as they are thought of. The downside is that the factory does not have the capacity to produce the volume to satisfy the demand and that is why we have this "backorder" situation. Should be much better in 2020.
