Plus the great names: Scylla, Charybdis, Gorge of Despair. ...some day.... hopefully... Descended by a party “using wetsuits and rock climbing gear” (Secor) . Basically descriptions I remember read like the Subway, at a steeper angle and filled halfway up the walls with house sized boulders.

So this turned out to be a troll thread by someone mimicking the mentality and skill level typically seen on the "survival" boards, but the sad part is how accurately those things are portrayed. In that sense it was very well done. If you have not read any of them, you might be amazed at the amount of gear, and how much some of it costs, that some people carry for even a short dayhike. By far the heaviest burden they carry is their fear of the outdoors, though, which often makes me wonder their reason for being fascinated by it(or perhaps that IS the reason). Either way, it's bizarre to see grown men who don't have the skills many of us had instilled by the Boy Scouts by our early teens pretending to be bushcraft or survival "experts". Competence breeds confidence, but so does self-delusion. A lot of people are on the wrong side of that one, including backpackers.

I don't know exactly how big the property was I got lost around 7 or so I came out all around 11:30 at night Then don't say how big it was. Do you normally walk into other people's houses and act this way? You seem entirely too timid to be in the woods. You need to work on that by building skills more so than gear. You might want to be a bit more civil and you will receive civility.

danny90sdIf you're interested in bushcraft and survival skills, you might want to check out www.survivalistboards.com/Most of here are much more concerned about NOT getting ourselves into that type of situation. We watch Bear Grylls and laugh our asses off at the stupid stuff he advocates. Not that he doesn't come up with clever ideas once in a while, but the whole idea is to avoid putting yourself in that type of situation. There's a certain satisfaction in knowing that you CAN survive if you found yourself in a difficult situation, and many of us have practices survival skills, such as starting a fire with a bow and spindle, or making a solar still, but MUCH, MUCH more useful are honing your navigation skills, and putting together a collection of gear that keeps you dry, warm and safe.

Bear grylls is an idiot Survivorman and dave cantebury are better As far as this not being a survivalist site Ive understood that on a hurry This seems to be closer to boy scout liberal site Some of you seem like youd rather freeze to death than chop some wood and build an a frame and a fire Yes yes I know youd rather have a sleeping bag and tarp pyramid thingy

This seems to be closer to boy scout liberal site Well, many of use are liberal, particularly when it comes to environmental issues. I personally like having a small fire, and I often go without a stove if there are no fire restrictions, but I don't depend on it for warmth. The Boy Scouts teach survival skills, navigation and orienteering, actually all kinds of useful things. I was never a scout, but I'd say that most of us would consider your intended insult puts us in pretty good company.

Damn, either Danny is a trolls troll, or utterly incompetent. I could speculate more, but think I'll leave it there... Nothing ive said makes me utterly incopetent Very few of you understood what I was saying. you just kept repeating the same line over and over which made you think youre smarter I said if I cant properly tringulate my location my return bearing will be way off and will only get me more lost Nor will it show me back to the trail, instead it will point back to my car in a straight line which does me little good if the terrain is uneven or if I want to go back to the last point I got lost in I would have to have been setting waypoints the entire time to even know where the last point was, otherwise my second option would be to hope that I have marked where my car was where the trailhead was to begin. at least I can go back there But unless I can clearly see the trail from the distance that would not take me down to Trail it would take me through heavy bush eventually back to my car My other option would have been that if my car was near something pretty obvious like a big mountain and I got lost I could use my compass to set it pointing at the mountain and then make my way to the mountain without a map just following A compass again that would not take me back to the trail it would take me back to the mountain in a straight line Only a GPS with a tracking feature while having good batteries and a satellite signal the entire time would take me right back the way I came no matter how I got lost in the first place again I understand this is assuming that the thing was on the entire time and the tracking feature was activated Every single thing I have said so far as a fact So essentially what this means as far as using a map and Compass if you're not paying attention to the map and Compass the entire freaking time or if you walk off the trail and you don't Mark where you walked off at, a map and Compass will not help you much if at all this is assuming that you are in the best of circumstances such as not being hungry dehydrated or panicking where is the GPS is like a Nanny as long as you know how to navigate to the menus it will take you back step by step

I feel the same way about you I understand what you were saying you were saying that you don't want to be lost in the first place that way you don't have to be cutting down trees and doing damage to the nature I understood what you said you didn't understand what I said
