Ouch … no fun Collar bone, shoulder blade and ribs … sounds very painful … more so when you breathe On the bright side, it could have been worse.
Guess you need a new helmet, but that can wait for a while. Good luck, get well soon.

Yeah, buddy. Been there. Done that.
Never, never underestimate the safety value of your bike helmet. I'm so glad you had it on. As I tell other bike riders I know who don't wear a helmet, "It doesn't matter how good of a rider you are, what matters is how bad of a driver they are."
We'll be seeing more forum participation from you since, well, you'll be spending more time in front of the computer.

At first I was content that my health insurance would cover this completely, but realized this morning that my new laptop in my backpack got pretty smashed up last night (the screen is obliterated and falling out in tiny shards). At first it annoyed me but I just realized the bag/laptop's impact probably saved from a bit more injury than I already got. I filed a claim with my auto insurance policy and hopefully will be able to get a replacement laptop, and a new helmet and bike seat while I'm at it, billed to the other driver's insurance. That and any medical bills that make their way to me beyond health insurance.
It'll be fine however the finances work out. Dang, I really liked that laptop though, and it'll be a bit harder to work from home here without it. C'est la vie.
If I'm b****ing about a laptop, things are okay. Still feeling lucky.

Good you are on the mend.
I wear one of those BMX style bike helmets myself, sometimes........ always when riding the bike.

Scary, glad you are ambulatory and not seriously injured.
I ride a motorcycle and am extremely vigilant regarding the current trend in automobile driver texting and hand held device use of cell phones. It's like drunk drivers 24/7.
The motorcycle is garaged every year at Halloween with the time change. The combination of distracted drivers, the immediate, unfamiliar darkness conversion and aggressive, rush hour driving frightens me.
Motorcyclists refer to car people as "cagers" and assume each one is an enemy trying to kill us.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery and return to everyday life.

What a scary accident -- hope your recovery is speedy! Broken bones are painful but at least they heal. Brain injuries not so much. Glad you had a helmet!

Used your accident to talk to my son about maybe actually wearing a bright-colored jacket on his commute The reflective vests nowadays are amazing. Here's an example of one (photo from the internet... not my family):

I am sorry to hear of all of this. You didn't say, so I am hoping all of the injuries & broken bones are on your non-dominant side. If you have to keep an arm in a sling for a while, and if movement hurts, it will help if the injuries are not on the dominant side.
Settlements- Not just a new lap top, new bike seat, and the Dr bills. Since the driver was cited, you can collect for pain and suffering, along with any other inconveniences, like inability to "service your marriage" due to discomfort. Seriously. That is a term used in formal papers like IRS allowances. Difficult as it is to put a price on such things, trust that the insurance people have done so long ago. Get whatever you can, and use it to do whatever you feel is right.

I'm glad you are ok. I ride home 7 miles every night after dark. I am lit up like the Las Vegas strip but not a week goes by where I am endangered by some driver that doesn't see me. I have the feeling it is just a matter of time until I end up in a similar situation as you. And yep, folks, wear a helmet.

Ouch! Sounds like you are very lucky. I hope you have a full and speedy recovery. I also hope the vehicle driver learns something from this.
