rebeccad, when portions or all of the river (or lakes) are frozen, look for the fascinating and beautiful patterns just below the surface of the ice.

Got caught in what could be best described as a foen on Mount Magazine, AR this weekend. They were expecting snow, it turned into an ice storm. But not the usual kind. It was just a heavy fog that coated everything. Got really sick on Sunday; in bed all day wishing mom would bring chicken soup.
Escaped yesterday. weak and tired. My car had 1/3" to 1/2" rime ice all over it. Took me 45 minutes just to get a door open to start the engine. Another hour to clear the windshield. Struggle when sick and weak. Still worn out.

Hope you're able to feel better ASAP. Recovering well. Twas a bummer to be ill. Was in the "just get home to bed" mode. Missed some great pics of ice in the trees. It was beautiful.

^ Striking picture! The composition is quite similar to how I like to lay out my photos. It also reminds me of Far East paintings, which I really like and think don't get anywhere near the appreciation they deserve.

Honeycombs Wilderness Study Area (WSA) BLM Washakie County WY. The sagebrush steppe in winter. The thin line on the horizon is the Absaroka Range and the Washakie Wilderness.

I'm enjoying all these winter photos and art work, especially since I'm doing so while having indoor heat to keep me warm. Seriously, art work and photos that can so effectively simulate actually being outside make me feel as if I'm actually there. And as GaliWalker commented, and adding a little bit of my own interpretation, the design and composition in art work can create different interpretations. e.g., echo 's photos are works of wildlife and human interaction, conveying a sense of either passive or friendly interaction. markskor and balzaccom 's artwork convey solitude and serenity, with the former's blending different levels of detail and the latter's using 5 primary subjects: sky, evergreens, tree trunks, snow and fence. rangewalker 's photos provide vivid detail and also blend a variety of those details (linear shrubs offset by fluffy evergreen branches, for one aspect). The second photo is a maze of complex forms and shades, to the point that initially I thought it was a color photo. And the softness of the clouds and shrubbery are contrasted with massive rock formations. There's SO much to see in these photos; every time I've viewed them I've seen different interactions in their content. But beyond analysis, they all present beautiful winter scenes.
