The Georges Fire is NE of Whitney Portal Road and is now 2000 acres. No hikers, currently, are allowed to start on the Mount Whitney or Shepherds Pass trails. Started yesterday with a lightning strike.

geomac.usgs.gov/viewer/viewer.shtmlPer map (input: Ferguson), yet another wildfire in the Merced South Fork drainage. Since the north perimeter is along the SR141 highway/river and daily breezes tend to move west to east up canyons, it tends to point towards a source of some human like an urban moron cigarette smoker with an inane reckless habit of tossing butts out of a car or some psycho cretin firebug.
For we backpacking enthusiasts, all these fires popping up in the state are once again threatening each of our mid to late summer summer plans with miserable air quality. Something that was uncommon decades ago but in this era of state overpopulation endless insane development, a plague.

Actually historically this state experienced much more frequent fire than it is now. 2 million acres is the average acres burned per year in Northern California alone pre-European settlement. So I wouldn't call it a plague. Or maybe you're calling us the plague, that I might agree with! What may seem "normal" to us in the past 100 or so years of fire suppression really isn't normal, or natural. Anyway, I'm definitely an advocate for early or late season backpacking, if for no other reason that I dislike crowds and permit hassles. But I tend to avoid the wildfire smoke that way as well. Did two trips in June that were primo and will probably pick up again in late September.

Yes. The 20th century was abnormally wetter and less annual variation than the historic norms of California. Flood years interspersed in multi-year droughts was the pattern. Newspaper records from the 19th century note smoke-filled valley air for weeks on end. Fire history research shows 1829 was a horrendous fire year, with numerous large fires from northern Mexico to British Columbia, from the Pacific coast to the Rockies.

They’re closing the Glacier Point Rd to set up a base camp at the ski area. Not looking good. /

We had a fire quite close to home caused by a lightning strike. Thankfully it was less than an acre. A great fire response here because it could've got out of hand quickly, like so many of the fires have. We did have 2/10ths inch of rain in less than ten minutes about then too. Quite unusual around here.

Update on the Yosemite Closures: Yosemite National Park announces Yosemite Valley will reopen to all visitors at 4:00 pm on Friday, August 3, 2018. Limited visitor services will be available inside Yosemite Valley, including campgrounds, lodging, and food service operations. Yosemite Valley has been temporarily closed since July 25 due to smoke impacts and for firefighting operations along El Portal Road and the Wawona Road due to the Ferguson Fire. Due to continuing firefighting operations along the Wawona Road, the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias and the Wawona Road (Highway 41) from the South Entrance of Yosemite National Park to Tunnel View will remain closed until further notice. www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/yosemite-national-park-announces-yosemite-valley-to-reopen-at-400-pm-on-friday-august-3-2018.htm

Currently the only access to the park is from the east via Tioga Pass. Everything else is closed due to fire activity. They’re actively setting backfires so that’s impacted Hetch Hetchy and the 120 Access.
