go to a party store and buy some glow in the dark insect to hang on the zipper pull. I happen to prefer scorpions.

go to a party store and buy some glow in the dark insect to hang on the zipper pull. I happen to prefer scorpions. The slight flaw in that might be if scorpions are at all territorial: they see some strangers invading THIER turf and rally in a pissed off wave of venom dripping stingers... ETA: A classic prank was to take a newbie diver off La Jolla Cove where there are a lot of Garibaldi fish. The males of the Garibaldi groom and maintain "lawns" of algae on specific rocks that they are very protective of (and these lawns are passed down through generations, one professor speculated the verysame lawns might have been in the same locations since the last sea level rise: hundreds and perhaps thousands of years...). So when they see their reflection in the facemask of a diver they charge the "intruder". lol, boy do people jump when these hand sized bright orange fish rush straight into their face!

I'm seriously considering pulling the trigger on a new quilt.

There's two pieces of gear I'd like to have:
The first, if such a thing exists, is a smart phone for hiking navigation that captures satellites as well (or almost as well) as a decent GPS dedicated for backpacking. I have Gaia GPS on a Samsung Tab4, but that device doesn't hold a signal all that great and is too big. I'd like to carry a single device for navigating, taking high quality pics, and as my cell phone.
Secondly, I want a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC hammock. I switched to hanging a few years ago and bought a standard-length Blackbird just before the XLC came out. I like my Blackbird, but at just over 6' tall I think I'd like the XLC even better. The shorter BB could be used by a frequent backpacking buddy who hasn't tried hanging yet, but I'd like to get him into it so we're not limited to campsites with level ground.

Interesting, but it doesn't mention navigation. My device would be in airplane mode on the trail; not looking to make a phone call.

I've got a surprisingly long list for someone who really has all the gear...looks like we'll be getting a new tent (probably keep the old one all patched up for car-camping and a loaner), and we may need at least one new sleeping pad. I like that thing OlZeke linked too, but it's about twice as heavy as my NeoAir, partly because it doesn't seem to come in a "short" size. I don't need 72". It's nice, but I don't need it.
Also thinking about a quilt, and a new down sweater (hoping to catch something in the thrift shops, as they were very popular for the general populace last winter; just need to wait for fashion trends to move on and/or people to realize that a down jacket in a place where 55* is "cold" is a bit of overkill). Guess we're mostly in replacement mode. I'm sometimes tempted by a new pack, but have yet to see one that looks like it could compete with my 2004 Osprey Arial 60--which is smaller and much lighter then the new versions. Replacing gear that's worn out still means a chance to try to lighten the load, so it's not all bad.

My Motorola Droid Turbo does just fine as a "dedicated" GPS using Gaia. I use it off-trail in steep wooded terrain all the time. It also has an extended battery life so it can last a full three days between charges. I have both battery chargers and a solar charger if needed for extended trips. My last phone (HTC Droid DNA) also did quite well but wasn't waterproof like my current phone.

Thanks Tigger, I'll have to consider Motorola when I replace my Samsung S2.

I've been using blackbirds for quite a few years and at 6'3" the XLC had some appeal. The deal breaker for me was my go to hex tarp is 10.5 and makes for a tight squeeze coverage wise. Brandon says 11' tarp will do but still kinda tight judging from my 11' open hammock under my 11' tarp. For enough coverage for the XLC and a backpack hanging on one end a 12' tarp would be better or at least doors on an 11. One thing I really like from Warbonnet is the wind sock. Great in cold, windy weather! Breathes well enough to avoid any condensation but blocks wind and keeps condensation off your sleeping gear in the morning. The new piece of gear I'm considering is zpacks cuben lined rain jacket, xtra long. www.zpacks.com/accessories/wpb_jacket.shtml ..3rd generation? ..always makes me think I should hold out for the fourth.

I'm not really looking to buy anything but if I was, the two items I would buy would be a new pack to replace my old Jack Wolfskin which is getting pretty old and a new light-weight tent. Maybe something like the Nemo Blaze 2P Tent or a Nemo Meta 2.

I too am pleased with where my kit is right now, nothing on the shopping list. As for the wish list, maybe a Bearikade Expedition and a cuben Gatewood Cape (if Ron at SMD ever comes through on his threats to make them).
