Some of the powershots do still use AA's as far as I know. My Mom and sister have them and love them. the bigger ones do but not the smaller ELPH ones. Probably at some point the proprietary battery is just more space efficient. I've an earlier version of this one and like it. It's not in the same league as my Nikon D800 but it doesn't weigh 7.5 pounds with just one additional lens either. shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/powershot-elph-350-hs-blackGood zoom, image stabilization, decent low light performance. The one thing that can be off putting to some is there's no optical viewfinder, just the back display. Like a smartphone camera that way. A couple of extra batteries add no weight at all.

I've been using that one's older brother, the ELPH 300 HS, as my primary camera for four years now. Can't say enough good things about it. My work camera is an Olympus Tough TG-something. It's decent and somewhat more life-proof (needs to be for underground construction photos), but the picture quality and general operation don't seem to stand up to the Canon.

I might get some reflective zipper pulls, esp for my Double Rainbow whose very small pulls disappear under the fly. www.cascadedesigns.com/msr/tents/tent-accessories/enhance/categoryI did put some ed string (from a compass?) on one of them, and some kelty trip tease might work too Oh I just got a 1/2 off base layer that is size tall so it will hang below my pack even when I bend over.

I have some of those "glow in the dark" zip pullers from another brand. They come very handy for the 2AM short walk.

dayhiker, just use some 2mm reflective cord. That's what I've done to my tents.

Next piece of gear will be a sleeping bag, and a pad soon after. Why? I'm just starting out, don't have a mummy bag, I remember buying my first sleeping bag for backpacking. When you actually go to do it do some research of your own and ask questions on this forum. I'm sure there must be a topic already for picking out sleeping bags but if not you can always start one.

trinity gave me an idea. I think I'll get a zeppelin. Arrive at the trailhead in style. I won't get there all frustrated due to traffic. I'll start out in a better mood. Yeah, a zeppelin. BTW, how much for a used zeppelin? Philistines. Maybe I'll just get a Flamethrower instead. www.arrowhead-equipment.com/store/c14/FlameThrower_Down_Gear.html Yeah, a flamethrower.

Something else I'm considering is a Tenkara rod. I've never used one before, and I'm pretty attached to my western fly fishing setup, but the simplicity, weight, and packability of the Tenkara setup is pretty appealing.

Something else I'm considering is a Tenkara rod. Seems like you or someone else recently mentioned one of these rods. I had to go looking to find out what was meant. Now I know it's for fly fishing. This my "learn something new each day" moment.

Yep already created a thread a month or so ago. I know what I want just haven't got it yet.

dayhiker, just use some 2mm reflective cord. That's what I've done to my tents Not the same. With reflective cordage you need a light to see them, the glow in the dark bits , although very faint, can by definition be seen in the dark. I like them for two reasons. One is that the very faint glow can be seen laying down and it looks somewhat warm to me, the other reason is that because I can find them without having to turn the light on I don't lose my night vision nor do I need to search for the zip pulls. (this is for the night time toilet break) Mind you, you can get GloRope/GlowRope ...

Mind you, there is also the added bonus of not shining your light onto others if not camping alone.
