I have my gear pretty much where I like it but I'm always looking for ideas and I like to hear from others what they like and why. I've often found that picking peoples brains I've been able to improve my setup.
So I am curious if people are willing to share what piece of gear are think of purchasing or making next and why?

I'm serious thinking of getting a puffy down jacket for this winter. However, based on the number of outdoor jackets I already have, it's tough to justify.

I need nothing for my gear set up. I might want a few things, like a better, lighter, pad. looking at the Klymit Static Or a nice bp'ing pillow.

I currently own a 80L pack that I bought about 5ish years ago. Since I bought the pack, I have been able to reduce my gear weight down to 11.97 pounds. With the lowered gear weight, I have lots of unused pack volume and extra pack weight that I am looking towards eliminating. Thus, my most looked forward to purchase for the next backpacking season is a smaller sized pack.

Interesting. I also reduced from a similar size pack to a 65l and I've been eyeing an sleeping pad from Klymit. I'm still using a Therm-a-Rest RidgeRest. However, it's only 14oz and I hate to go up instead of down.

I don't plan to buy any gear in the near term. Eventually I'll upgrade our two-person tent, but I'm not in a hurry.

I'm not sure which will come next, the new photosensitive polarized progressive lenses or the BFG All Terrain KO2 tires.

I'm not sure which will come next, the new photosensitive polarized progressive lenses or the BFG All Terrain KO2 tires. I had photosensitive lenses in my previous glasses and was disappointed. They didn't get dark enough (or have enough coverage) for bright sunlight, they took too long to clear up when I went inside, and they didn't darken much in the car, so I still had to have sunglasses for driving. I took the really serious plunge and got polarized progressive Maui Jims for driving and outdoor pursuits. They were absurdly expensive, but the optical quality is unbelievable, and I can even read the map while wearing them. (I got pretty tired of swapping glasses to look at the map).

Executed major gear refurbishment last year for long distance hiking and rock climbing.
Actually received (6) USGS 7.5 minute topo maps today.
Current brainwaves are focused on Colorado bicentennial peaks for the next two years.
That said, a set of Heidenau K76 Dual Sport tires is nearer than I think.

20 degree underquilt, possibly a zeppelin from underground quilts, or something similar. Because it's the last major piece of hammock camping gear that I need.

I just bought a pair of winter gloves. Maybe a PLB next(?) because my current one is past the "expiration date".

Personal Locator Beacon.
only two things on the need list right now -- boots and a camera. after ten years the lens cover on my trusty P&S camera stopped closing... guess I should've taken better care. the iPhone camera works great but the battery only lasts a few days maybe and then my phone is dead.

If you're using a point & shoot let me point you to the camera I purchased this spring. Olypmus TG-4I really love this camera. It's macros and live composite modes are really fun to work with. It allowed me to grab some pics of the Northern Lights on Lake Superior this year. I'm still learning how to use it but you can see the results here towards the bottom of the page. They may not be spectacular shots but I'm happy with them. I'd never be able to get them otherwise. www.flickr.com/photos/hiker88/albums/72157658505235635/page2

if anyone can recommend a decent P&S that uses batteries that I can swap out, I'd love to hear some suggestions. Do the Cannon Powershots still use AA batts?
ETA: thanks for the suggestion. I'm not very camera smart so I get lost in the gobs and gobs of specs involved in a camera shopping.
