Needing ideas and experiences here. I don't want my plans derailed (planning to leave for a longer hike Sunday night), but when hiking with even a light load my hip socket starts giving me trouble about mile 6. The pain gets so bad I can barely lift my leg. It goes away almost completely with rest. Anyone had some thing similar and did you keep hiking? I have a long trip planned starting next week and I need a fresh resupply of good hips before then. Ideas?

Ha, ha! I've been eating Ibuprofen before I start and again in the evening. Zippo relief.

Have you seen a medical specialist? Hate to say it but might need a new hip. OTOH are you training for longer hikes with a pack, maybe you need to build up to it or do some specific exerises.

Not yet - definitely will when I get back. Yes, I have been doing 10 miles training hikes with increasingly loaded pack. Also doing stretches. Any specific exercises?

Maybe consider what kind of footwear you're using. Adding weight can cause some misalignment starting with feet going through the knee and on to the hip. Perhaps insoles catered to your foot may help.

Do you get the pain when you walk that far without a pack? If not, one possibility is that your hipbelt rides too low and impedes your leg motion. That puts extra strain on your hip flexors.

Lot of back pain radiates to the hips and is mistaken for hip problems. I first thought my pain was do to my hips but the pain is due to several bad disk. It gives me problems all the time and the only thing that works in stretching, yoga and similar exercises. When carrying a load pain does increase with time. I no longer can carry much of a load so my backpacking days are behind me but I can hike for miles with a very light day pack. Time for you to see a doc and see what the problem is (hip vs. back) and what the options are.

Thanks everyone! As far as footwear, I have always worn KEEN midis but recently switched to Altra Lone Peaks to see if lightening my footwear and a zero drop would help.
I have worn the same pack and shoes for years, but the pain is new this season. The joys of getting older!
Maybe I will have to pack some gin along with the pain killers for now! Tried Superfeet greeen, but the arch was so high it was uncomfortable. Maybe I will revisit them and try another color? Any recs?

I have a similar issue riversong. Whenever i have a light load, and can move a little faster, my hip starts giving me issues after about mile 2. The pain will last for the duration of the hike, but is fine when I rest, and no lingering pain the next day. No amount of pain reliever has ever really helped. There's only 2 things i've found that helps (some). Extensive stretching at the trailhead and if it begins hurting, I try to change my gait, either through length of stride, or the angle of my foot when I step.
I'm only 35, but I suspect i'll need a new hip sometime in my mid 40s.

Any good athletic/running shop should be able to help you with the right color of inserts. If I read correctly, the pain started before the shoe change, correct? Like Roger, I've had back issues that manifested as hip and knee pain (once, it hurt when sitting. the second, when standing.) A few visits to the chiro fixed that.

Fish oil and Solgar Curcumin helps with my joint issues while training.

You might also trying to add in some extra hip-flexor exercises, if you don't already do them regularly. Those muscles don't get stretched too well with just normal living -- so targeting them might help. I like yoga for that reason.

Yoga is amazing for opening up your hips and relieving various back pains. Google Yoga poses for hip pain / hip opening.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post. I feel like I've got some strategies now, and this pain WILL NOT STOP ME!
Heading out - will soon be walking among the clouds. Is it wierd to do yoga in a skirt at the top of passes?
I will take a sip of something stiff and toast each one of you in thanks of your help. I now have faith once again that I can do this trip!
I had been discouraged and feeling like I had better hang it up and buy an RV. (Ha!!!! Never happening!)
Joy to you!
