No advice on the hip pain but just wanted to say that River Song was a favorite character of mine on Doctor Who.

See a doctor. As reflected by others there are a variety of possible causes. I started having hip pains a few years ago and an orthopedist confirmed it is joint damage - the "ball" at the top of my femur didn't form properly from birth, in both hips, and it never bothered me when younger but over years has slowly caused friction and misalignment. Doctor told me to take glucosamine, which is over the counter and helps lubricate and build up the cushioning in joints, and that does help. But it's not the kind of thing you pop a pill when it hurts, you have to take it continually (twice a day for me) so it builds up in your system. Doc also said I probably will be a candidate for a hip replacement, twice, at some point in the future, but that could be a year or 25 years depending on me -- how much it hurts and when I say uncle.

Trekking poles and experimenting with the weight distribution in your pack. Push the heaviest weight as absolutely close to your back as possible. I've noticed significant pain decrease by tweaking the height and balance of the items within my pack.

I was suffering from hip pain for a while but it mine manifested itself afterward. It was mostly weak muscles so the more I exercised the better they got. And I can't stress the importance of stretching enough! It's incredible how issues in one part of your body can telegraph to another. Yoga is wonderful!

Yes. Professional diagnosis is essential for proper treatment. I started experiencing hip pain a little over a year ago, which xrays showed to be arthritis. With some targeted exercises & stretches and a prescription for diclofenac my condition is much improved.

I think you need to figure out why exactly it's happening. Best bet is probably to see a doctor. I had a lot of hip pain a while back, and it acted the same way as yours. I discovered it was caused by weakness in my core, especially lower back and hip flexors. Try looking up exercises that target these areas to strengthen and see if that helps. Also proper warm up and stretches to target these areas has helped me.
